Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain the optically-active title compound of high optical purity, having high insecticidal activity as an acid component of pyrethroid insecticides, by reacting an optically-active organic base with a cyclopropanecarboxylic acid and resolving the products taking advantage of the solubility difference.
CONSTITUTION: An optically-active organic base of formula II (R1WR2 are H or lower alkyl), such as (+)-α-(p-methylbenzyl)-benzylamine, is reacted with an equimolar amount of a cyclopropanecarboxylic acid of formula I (R is 1W6C lower alkyl), such as (±)-cis.trans-2,2-dimethyl-3-n-butoxycyclopropanecarboxylic acid to form a salt, from which crystal of (+) amine salt of (+)-cyclocarboxylic acid is obtained using an organic solvent such as ethanol. The crystal is decomposed with an alkali or a mineral acid, and extracted with an organic solvent. Subsequently, an aqueous layer is decomposed with a alkali or an acid and extracted with an organic solvent, it obtain (+)-cyclopropanecarboxylic acid.
