Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain the titled compound useful as an intermediate for medicines, agricultural chemicals, etc., especially prostaglandin, by subjecting a 3-hydroxy-4- cyclopentenone derivative to isomerization treatment in the presence of chloral and an organic amine.
CONSTITUTION: A compound expressed by formula I [X is CH2OH or COOR (R is H or 1W6C alkyl); n is 4W8] is subjected to isomerization treatment in the presence of chloral in a molar amount of 0.005W1, preferably 0.01W0.3 based on the above-mentioned compound and an organic amine (e.g. triethylamine or N-methylpiperidine) in a molar amount of 0.005W0.5 based on the afore-mentioned compound at -10W+100°C, preferably 0W+90°C temperature to afford the aimed compound expressed by formula II.
