Abstract

PURPOSE: To prepare glutamic acid from easily available raw materials, easily and economically, by reacting N-(substituted methylene)glycine ester with an acrylic acid ester, and hydrolyzing the reaction product.
CONSTITUTION: Glutamic acid is prepared by (1) reacting the compound of formulaI(R1 is H, CH3 or aryl; R2 is 1W4C alkyl) with an acrylic acid ester, (2) hydrolyzing the resultant glutamic acid derivative of formula II (R3 is 1W4C alkyl) in the presence of an acid to obtain the compound of formula III, and (3) hydrolyzing the compound in the presence of a base. As an alternative method, glutamic acid can be obtained by hydrolyzing the compound of formula II in the presence of a base, and hydrolyzing the resultant compound of formula IV in the presence of an acid. The hydrolysis is pref. carried out in all cases at 20W30°C for 3W5 hours.
