Abstract

PURPOSE: To prepare an optically active substituted isovaleric acid having excellent insecticidal activity as the acid component of a pyrethroid insecticide and having a high optical purity, by reacting a substituted isovaleric acid with an optically active α-phenyl-ethylamine, and resolving the products taking advantage of the solubility difference.
CONSTITUTION: A substituted isovaleric acid expressed by the formula (R is H, methyl or Cl), e.g. (±)-α-(p-chlorophenoxy)isovaleric acid, etc., is reacted with the equimolar amount of (+)-α-phenyl-ethylamine to give the salt, from which the crystal of the (+)-α-phenyl-ethylamine salt of the (+)-substituted isovaleric acid is obtained by using an organic solvent, e.g. n-hexane, benzene, etc. The crystal is decomposed with an alkali or a mineral acid and extracted with an organic solvent. The water layer is decomposed with an acid or an alkali and extracted with an organic solvent to give the optically active substituted isovaleric acid, e.g. (+)-α-(p-chlorophenoxy)-isovaleric acid, etc.
