Abstract
PURPOSE: To obtain diisobutene which is a raw material of an alcohol, an alkylphenol, high-octane gasoline, etc., in high purity and high yield without using expensive equipment, by the heat-dimerization of isobutene in the presence of a specific catalyst and water.
CONSTITUTION: Diisobutene is obtained by dimerizing isobutene in the presence of an oxyacid of boron (e.g. orthoboric acid, metaboric acid, etc.) or an oxygen- containing boron compound which gives said oxyacid under reaction conditions, (e.g. B2O3, boric acid ester of a lower alkanol, etc.) as a catalyst. The reaction is carried out in the liquid phase in the presence of water at a temperature above 150°C, preferably at 180W230°C. The catalyst is used in an amount of more than 0.1 mole, converted to orthoboric acid, per mole of isobutene. After the reaction, the catslyst is recovered almost completely, recycled and reused.
