Abstract

PURPOSE: Only heating of 4-methylpentenoic acid in the presence of a solid acid catalyst economically and advantageously gives title compound usefuel as a starting material for various medicines, perfumes, agricultural chemicals in high yield.
CONSTITUTION: 4-Methylpentenoic acid is heated in the presence of a solid acid catalyst at 250W450°C and converted to 3-methyl-2-cyclopentene-1-one. The solid catalyst used is, e.g., silica-alumina, solid phosphoric acid, boron phosphate, zeolite. The starting compound, 4-methylpentenoic acid, is readily prepared by reaction between methallyl chloride and an acetoacetate ester in the presence of an alkali metal alkoxide followed by hydrolysis using an alkali.
