Abstract

(57)【要約】 【構成】非磁性支持体上に強磁性粉末と結合剤とを主体
とする磁性層が形成されてなる磁気記録媒体において、
上記磁性層は厚みが0.1〜0.6μmであって、BE
T法による比表面積が10m2 /g以上であり、かつp
Hが7.5以下のαアルミナを上記強磁性粉末100重
量部に対して3〜12重量部含有することを特徴とす
る。 【効果】このように磁性層の厚みのみならず、用いる研
磨剤の比表面積、pHについても所定の値に規定してい
るので、短波長記録に対応すべく薄塗りした場合でも、
良好な電磁変換特性が保たれた上で、なお且つ良好な走
行耐久性を有する磁気記録媒体を得ることが出来る。

Description

【発明の詳細な説明】
【0001】
【産業上の利用分野】本発明は、磁気テープ等の磁気記
録媒体に関するものである。
【0002】
【従来の技術】近年ビデオテープの高画質化が盛んに実
施及び検討されている。8ミリビデオではHi−8、V
HSではS−VHSといった従来のシステムと比較して
輝度信号の記録波長をより短くしてシステムとして高画
質化に対応した商品の構成比が大きくなりつつある。
【0003】一般に短波長領域における電磁変換特性の
向上に対しては、磁性粉の微細化、磁性層の薄膜化等が
有効な手段となる。しかし、これらの手法を単純に用い
た場合には短波長領域における電磁変換特性は向上する
ものの、走行耐久性が劣化してしまい実用上の問題とな
る。
【0004】また、磁気記録媒体には、耐久性向上のた
め、一般的には酸化クロムやαアルミナなどの研磨剤が
添加されている。これら研磨剤の粒径は小さい方が電磁
変換特性に対して好ましいものの、従来の1.5〜3.
0μmといった一般的な磁性層厚では粒径の小さい研磨
剤を用いた場合には、磁性層表面に有効に存在させるこ
とが出来ないため、電磁変換特性を犠牲にして添加量を
多くしないと十分な耐久性が得られないといった問題が
残されていた。

【発明が解決しようとする課題】本発明は、従来のこの
ような問題に鑑み提案されたもので、磁性層の厚さのみ
ならず、用いる研磨剤の比表面積、pHについても所定
の値に規定することにより、短波長記録に対応すべく薄
塗りした場合でも良好な電磁変換特性が保たれた上、な
お且つ良好な耐久性を有する磁気記録媒体を提供するこ
とを目的にしている。

【課題を解決するための手段】本発明は、上述の目的を
達成せんものと鋭意研究を重ねた結果、非磁性支持体上
に強磁性粉末と結合剤とを主体とする磁性層が形成され
てなる磁気記録媒体において、上記磁性層は厚みが0.
1〜0.6μmであって、BET法による比表面積が1
0m2 /g以上であり、かつpHが7.5以下のαアル
ミナを上記強磁性粉末100重量部に対して3〜12重
量部含有することにより、このような目的に適合する磁
気記録媒体を見いだし本発明を完成するに至ったもので
ある。
【0007】上記磁性層の厚みを小さくすることは、厚
み方向の自己減磁が軽減され、短波長領域における電磁
変換特性が向上する。しかし、研磨剤等の非磁性顔料の
粒子径が走行耐久性に大きく影響してしまい、従来の磁
性層厚で用いた場合には良好な走行耐久特性を示したB
ET法による比表面積;10m2 /g以下のαアルミナ
では電磁変換特性がた大幅に低下してしまう。
【0008】そこで、0.6μm以下の厚さの磁性層に
関して良好な走行耐久性を得るために種々の検討を行っ
たところ、従来の厚さの磁性層に対しては耐久性に問題
のあったBET法による比表面積;10m2 /g以上の
αアルミナ、特にpHが7.5以下のαアルミナを、強
磁性粉末100重量部に対して、3〜12重量部用いる
ことにより短波長における電磁変換特性が良好で、か
つ、走行耐久性にも優れた磁気記録媒体を得ることが出
来た。

【作用】このように、本発明では、磁性層は厚みが0.
1〜0.6μmであって、BET法による比表面積;1
0m2 /g以上のαアルミナ、特にpHが7.5以下の
αアルミナを、強磁性粉末100重量部に対して、3〜
12重量部用いることにより短波長における電磁変換特
性が良好で、かつ、走行耐久性にも優れた磁気記録媒体
を得ることが出来た。
【0010】上記磁性層の厚みについて、0.6μmを
越えた場合には、自己減磁により短波長領域における電
磁変換特性が悪化する。また、研磨剤の粒径を大きくし
ないと良好な耐久性が得られない。αアルミナの比表面
積を10m2 /gより小さくすると、0.6μm以下の
磁性層の厚みであっても、短波長領域における良好な電
磁変換特性が得られない。更に、pHが7.5より大き
いαアルミナでは、良好な分散状態が得られず、大きな
凝集体が存在し、良好な電磁変換特性が得られないばか
りでなく、磁性層の厚みが小さい場合には、ヘッドの寿
命をも短くしてしまう。
【0011】αアルミナの添加量について、3重量部よ
り少ない場合には、十分な耐久性が得られず、12重量
部より多い場合には、良好な電磁変換特性が得られない
ばかりでなく、ヘッドの寿命をも短くしてしまう。

【実施例】以下、本発明の具体的な実施例について説明
するが、本発明はこの実施例に限定されるものではない
ことはいうまでもない。 〔試料カセットテープの作成〕以下に示す組成からなる
メタル系磁性塗料をサンドミル分散した後、硬化剤(コ
ロネードL 5重量部)を添加し、ベースフィルム上に
塗布−乾燥−巻き取りした。その後高温、高圧条件下で
カレンダー処理→硬化処理→バックコート(0.6μ
m)した後、8ミリ幅にスリットして得られたテープを
8ミリカセットに組み込んで14種類の試料を得た。
【0013】テープの全厚は10.3〜10.7μmに
なるように用いたベースフィルムの厚みで調整した。研
磨剤として検討に用いたαアルミナの仕様、また得られ
た試料の仕様を表2に示す。メタル系磁性塗料の組成は
下記の表1に示す通りである。

【0015】以上のようにして作成した8ミリビデオカ
セットテープの電磁変換特性及び耐久性について以下に
示す方法により評価を行った。
【0016】〔評価方法〕 電磁変換特性;Hi−8モードでの記録・再生可能な8
ミリビデオデッキを用いて25℃、60%RHの環境下
でテープの10分間の部分に7MHzの信号を入力し、
7MHzでの出力と、そこから−1MHzのノイズとの
差を求めて、走行前C/Nとした。実施例1で得られた
値を0dbとして、この値との相対値を表2に示した。
【0017】耐久性;上記の評価で7MHzの信号を入
力した10分間の部分を40℃、80%RHの環境下
で、200回再生・巻戻しを繰り返した後に、7MHz
での出力と、そこから−1MHzのノイズとの差から走
行後のC/Nを求め、走行前C/Nからの劣化量をC/
N劣化量として表2に示した。
【0018】〔評価結果〕評価結果を表2に示す。表2
より、磁性層の厚さが0.6μm以下であり、かつ、研
磨剤として用いたαアルミナのpHが7.5以下である
とともに、比表面積も10m2 /g以上であり、添加量
も3〜12重量部の範囲内の場合(実施例1〜7)に
は、短波長領域における電磁変換特性が良好で、かつ走
行耐久性にも優れていることがわかる。
【0019】これに対して磁性層の厚みが0.6μmよ
り大きい場合(比較例1、2)は良好な電磁変換特性が
得られないばかりか、微細な(比表面積の大きな)αア
ルミナと組み合わせて使用した場合(比較例2)には、
十分な耐久性も得ることが出来ない。添加量の少ない場
合(比較例3)には、耐久性が十分でなく、繰り返し再
生の途中でヘッドクロッグが発生してしまった。逆に多
すぎた場合(比較例4)には、良好な電変換特性が得ら
れない。
【0020】また、磁性層の厚さが0.6μmより小さ
い場合でも、αアルミナのpHが7.5より大きい場合
(比較例5)や比表面積が10m2 /gより小さい場合
(比較例6)、またはpHが7.5より大きいととも
に、比表面積も10m2 /gより小さい場合(比較例
7)では良好な電磁変換特性が得られない。

【発明の効果】以上の説明からも明らかなように本発明
においては、磁性層の厚さのみならず、用いる研磨剤の
比表面積、pHについても所定の値に規定しているの
で、短波長記録に対応すべく薄塗りした場合でも、良好
な電磁変換特性が保たれた上で、なお且つ良好な走行耐
久性を有する磁気記録媒体を得ることが出来る。
【0023】従って、本発明によれば、現行のシステム
のみならず、今後考えられている記録波長の短いシステ
ムにおいても電磁変換特性、走行耐久性ともに良好な磁
気記録媒体を得ることが可能である。

    【特許請求の範囲】
  1. 【請求項1】 非磁性支持体上に強磁性粉末と結合剤と
    を主体とする磁性層が形成されてなる磁気記録媒体にお
    いて、 上記磁性層は厚みが0.1〜0.6μmであって、BE
    T法による比表面積が10m2 /g以上であり、かつp
    Hが7.5以下のαアルミナを上記強磁性粉末100重
    量部に対して3〜12重量部含有することを特徴とする
    磁気記録媒体。
