本発明に係る電解質材料は、水酸化物イオンをキャリアとする二次電池(亜鉛空気二次電池など)や水蒸気から水素と酸素を生成する電解セルなどの電気化学セルに用いられる電解質の構成材料として好適である。本実施形態では、水酸化物イオン(OH−)をキャリアとするアルカリ形燃料電池(AFC)用電解質の構成材料として本発明に係る電解質材料を適用した場合について説明する。
まず、上記一般式(1)によって表されるLDH粉末を準備する。このようなLDH粉末は市販品であってもよいし、硝酸塩や塩化物を用いた液相合成法等の公知の方法にて作製したものであってもよい。
以下、本発明に係る電気化学セルの一例として、水酸化物イオン(OH−)をキャリアとするアルカリ形燃料電池10について図面を参照しながら説明する。図1は、アルカリ形燃料電池10の構成を示す断面図である。
・アノード14: CH3OH+6OH−→6e−+CO2+5H2O
・全体 : CH3OH+3/2O2→CO2+2H2O
カソード12は、一般的に空気極と呼ばれる陽極である。アルカリ形燃料電池10の発電中、カソード12には、酸化剤供給手段13を介して、酸素(O2)を含む酸化剤が供給される。酸化剤としては、空気を用いるのが好ましく、空気は加湿されていることがより好ましい。カソード12は、内部に酸化剤を拡散可能な多孔質体である。カソード12の気孔率は特に制限されない。
アノード14は、一般的に燃料極と呼ばれる陰極である。アルカリ形燃料電池10の発電中、アノード14には、燃料供給手段15を介して、水素原子(H)を含む燃料が供給される。
電解質16は、カソード12とアノード14との間に配置される。電解質16は、カソード12及びアノード14のそれぞれに接続される。電解質16は、膜状、層状、或いは、シート状に形成される。電解質16の厚みは特に制限されないが、例えば1μm以上200μm以下とすることができる。
以上、本発明の実施形態について説明したが、本発明はこれらに限定されるものではなく、本発明の趣旨を逸脱しない限りにおいて種々の変更が可能である。

Fe、Co及びMnから選択される少なくとも1種の遷移金属の酸化物及び/又はFe、Co及びMnから選択される少なくとも1種の遷移金属の水酸化物と、
