ITO(Indium Tin Oxide)透明電極層が蒸着された一対のPET(Polyethylene terephthalate)フィルム上にプレチルト角が86°であるプレチルト垂直配向膜を形成した後、ゲスト−ホスト液晶層形成用組成物(液晶化合物(HCM009、HCCH社):異方性染料(X12、BASF社)=100:1(重量比率))をコーティングしてゲスト−ホスト液晶層を形成した。引き続き、PETフィルムの透明電極層が形成されていない面に外部電界の印加によって水平配向されている液晶層内の液晶化合物の光軸と約45°の角度の光軸を有する1/4波長板を形成し、前記1/4波長板のゲスト−ホスト液晶層が存在する面の反対面に反射板を追加で位置させて、図2に図示された構造のような反射型液晶素子(A1)を製作した。
ゲスト−ホスト液晶組成物(液晶化合物(HCM009、HCCH社):異方性染料(X12、BASF社)=100:0.7(重量比率))を利用してゲスト−ホスト液晶層を形成したことを除いては実施例1と同じ方式で反射型液晶素子(A2)を製作した。
PETフィルムを一つだけ利用して図3のような構造の反射型液晶素子を製作したことを除いては実施例1と同じ方式で反射型液晶素子(A3)を製作した。
図2のような構造で、1/4波長板が除外された構造を有する反射型液晶素子を形成したことを除いては実施例1と同じ方式で反射型液晶素子(B1)を製作した。
外部電界の印加によって水平配向されている液晶層内の液晶化合物の光軸と約20°の角度の光軸を有する1/4波長板を形成したことを除いては実施例1と同じ方式で反射型液晶素子(B2)を製作した。
実施例および比較例に係る液晶素子の反射率を電界が印加されていない場合と電界を印加した場合にそれぞれ測定した。

Claims (9)
- 液晶化合物および二色性染料を含むゲスト−ホスト液晶層と、
前記ゲスト−ホスト液晶層の両面に存在する一対のプレチルト垂直配向膜と、
一対のプレチルト垂直配向膜のそれぞれに形成され、ゲスト−ホスト液晶層に含まれる液晶化合物の配向を変更させる一対の電極層と、
一対の電極層のそれぞれに形成された基材層と、
いずれか一つの基材層に形成された1/4波長板を含み、
ゲスト−ホスト液晶層は液晶化合物100重量部対比1〜3重量部の二色性染料を含み、
1/4波長板の光軸は外部電界の印加によって、水平配向されているゲスト−ホスト液晶層に含まれる液晶化合物の光軸と40°〜50°の角度を形成し、
下記の数式1を満足するように、液晶層および基材層と電極層の厚さ範囲が設定され、
外部電界が印加される状態で、ヘイズが10%未満である透明モードを具現する、
反射型液晶素子:

前記数式1で、bはゲスト−ホスト液晶層の厚さ、aは基材層および電極層の厚さの合計である。 - 液晶化合物はN型ネマティック液晶化合物である、請求項1に記載の反射型液晶素子。
- 外部電界が印加されていない状態で、ゲスト−ホスト液晶層に含まれる液晶化合物のプレチルト角は70°〜90°の範囲内にある、請求項1または2に記載の反射型液晶素子。
- ゲスト−ホスト液晶層は3μm〜30μmの厚さ範囲を有する、請求項1から3の何れか一項に記載の反射型液晶素子。
- プレチルト垂直配向膜はラビング配向膜または光配向膜である、請求項1から4の何れか一項に記載の反射型液晶素子。
- 反射板をさらに含み、前記反射板は1/4波長板のゲスト−ホスト液晶層が存在する面の反対面に位置する、請求項1から5の何れか一項に記載の反射型液晶素子。
- 外部電界が印加されていない状態で、30%以上の反射率を表わす透過モードを維持する、請求項1から6の何れか一項に記載の反射型液晶素子。
- 外部電界が印加される状態で、30%未満の反射率を表わす遮断モードが維持される、請求項1から7の何れか一項に記載の反射型液晶素子。
- 請求項1から8のいずれか一項に記載の反射型液晶素子を含む、ミラー。
