Description
また、特許文献2には、画像表示媒体における2枚の基板間の領域を、隔壁によって複数の領域に区切り、この隔壁として、先端部のみが先細りする形状の隔壁を用いることが提案されている。
特許文献6には、表示媒体の一対の基板間に角柱状の間隙部材が設けられ、該一対の基板の向かい合う面の一方側にシーリング層を設け、表示媒体の開口を封止ことが提案されている。
請求項1に係る発明は、一対の基板と、前記一対の基板の間隙を保持すると共に、前記一対の基板の向かい合う方向の一端から他端に渡る全領域のうちの、該一対の基板の向かい合う方向に直交する方向の断面積が該一対の基板の何れか一方側に連続する他の部位の断面積より大きい第1部位を有する間隙部材と、前記一対の基板の少なくとも一方の基板に設けられ、該基板と前記間隙部材の端面との間に充填されると共に該間隙部材の該端面から前記第1部位を包含するように設けられ、該間隙部材における前記一対の基板の向かい合う方向の端部を保持する保持層と、前記一対の基板間に封入される液体中に分散された粒子群の付着を抑制するための表面層と、を備えた表示媒体である。
請求項2に係る発明によれば、保持層が導電性を有さない場合に比べて、表示媒体の駆動電圧の低減が図れる。
請求項3に係る発明によれば、基板間に液体を充填した場合であっても、間隙部材と基板との接着力が向上される。
請求項4に係る発明によれば、本発明における工程を有さない場合に比べて、間隙部材と基板との接着力が更に向上される。
請求項5に係る発明によれば、本発明における間隙部材及び保持層を備えない場合に比べて、間隙部材と基板との接着力が向上される。
このため、この間隙部材24における表示基板20側の端部は、該端部に設けられた第1部位24Aが表示基板20に設けられた保持層26に埋め込まれた状態となって、表示基板20側に保持される。
従って、第1部位24Aが、表示基板20に設けられた保持層26に埋め込まれた状態で保持され、間隙部材24と表示基板20との接着力の向上が図れると考えられる。
ここで、本実施の形態における透光性とは、可視光の透過率が60%以上であることを示している。
例えば、図1に示すように、保持層26としては、表示基板20の背面基板22と向かい合う側の面の全領域に渡って層状に設けられた形態が挙げられる。また、この保持層26は、表示基板20の背面基板22と向かい合う側の面の全領域に渡って層状に設けられた形態に限られず、例えば、図2に示す表示媒体10Aのように、保持層26が、表示基板20における背面基板22と向かい合う側の面の全領域のうちの、間隙部材24の端面に向かい合う領域に設けられ、該領域から、該間隙部材24の端面、及び該端面から第1部位24Aを包含する領域に連続して設けられた形態であってもよい。
また、図2に示すように、 保持層26が、表示基板20における背面基板22に向かい合う面上に、間隔を空けて複数設けられる場合には、保持層26は絶縁性とされることが望ましい。
光硬化性樹脂としては、エポキシ樹脂、アクリル樹脂、ウレタンアクリル樹脂、ポリエン-チオール樹脂などが挙げられる。
熱硬化性樹脂としては、エポキシ樹脂、ポリエステル樹脂、フェノール樹脂、メラミン樹脂、尿素樹脂、アルキド樹脂などが挙げられる。
電子線硬化性樹脂としては、アクリル樹脂、メタクリル樹脂、ウレタン樹脂、ポリエステル樹脂、ポリエーテル樹脂、シリコーン樹脂などが挙げられる。
また、2液硬化性材料としては、エポキシ樹脂、ウレタン樹脂、シリコーン樹脂等が挙げられる。吸湿硬化性樹脂としては、シアノアクリレート樹脂、変性シリコーン樹脂等が挙げられる。熱可塑性樹脂としては、ポリエステル樹脂、ウレタン樹脂、エチレン-酢酸ビニル樹脂、スチレン-ブタジエンゴム系樹脂、ニトリルゴム系樹脂、ポリアミド樹脂、ポリオレフィン樹脂などが挙げられる。
また、この保持層26を、絶縁性を有する層とする場合には、保持層26の構成材料として上記に挙げた具体例の中のエポキシ樹脂、アクリル樹脂、ウレタン樹脂、シリコーン樹脂等の絶縁性の材料を用いればよい。
なお、ここでいう「保持層26の厚み」とは、保持層26の最大厚みを示している。
しかし、この間隙部材24の形状は、間隙部材24における基板の対向方向の一端部に、交差方向に突出した第1部位24Aを有する形状であればよく、このような断面T字状に限られない。
具体的には、図4(B)に示すように、間隙部材24における表示基板20に近い側の端面から背面基板22側に所定距離ずれた位置に、第1部位24Aが配置されていてもよい。
なお、このように、間隙部材24が、保持層26内に複数の第1部位24Aを備える場合には、間隙部材24の端部を表示基板20側に強固に保持させる観点から、複数の第1部位24Aのうちの、交差方向の断面積が最も大きい第1部位24A(図5では第1部位24A4)が、最も表示基板20に近い側に配置されることが望ましい。
この場合には、表示基板20及び背面基板22の双方を、各々の基板の対向面に、保持層26及び表面層30を順に設けた構成とすればよい。
なお、図9に示すように、第1部位24Aが、表示媒体10を表示基板20側から視認したときには、各間隙部材24の表示基板20の面に沿った延伸方向に沿って帯状に設けられた状態となっている場合には、図9中におけるB−B’断面、及びC−C’断面の模式図が、例えば、図1に示す模式図に相当することとなる。
また、図10(B)に示すように、第1部位24Aは、表示媒体10を表示基板20側から視認したときに、各間隙部材24の表示基板20の面に沿った延伸方向における、各間隙部材24どうしが交差する領域以外の領域にのみ設けられていているときには、図10(B)におけるF−F’断面の模式図が、例えば、図1に示す模式図に相当することとなる。
(1)背面基板22上に間隙部材24を形成する工程と、
(2)表示基板20上に刺激硬化性材料を含む塗布層を形成する工程と、
(3)上記背面基板22上に形成された間隙部材24の端部に設けられた第1部位24Aを、塗布層中に埋没させる工程と、
(4)塗布層に刺激を付与して硬化させる工程と、
を経ることによって作製される。
背面基板22上に間隙部材24を形成する方法としては、インプリント法、エッチング法、レジスト法、樹脂塗布法、等が用いられる。
そして、この刺激硬化性樹脂の硬化によって形成された、断面形状をT字状とされた間隙部材24を基材52と共に金型54から取り外す(図12(B)参照)。
これによって、図1に示すような、基板の対向方向への断面の形状をT字状とされた間隙部材24が背面基板22上に形成される。
次の、この本体部24Bの、表示基板20側の先端部に樹脂を塗布することで、第1部位24Aを形成する(図17(B)参照)。これによって、図3(B)に示すような、円柱状または角柱状の本体部24Bの表示基板20側の端部に、第1部位24Aとして、基板の対向方向への断面形状が球状である間隙部材24が、背面基板22上に形成される(図17(B)参照)。
次に、図18(A)に示すように、表示基板20上に、刺激硬化性材料を含む塗布層27を形成する。この塗布層27の形成には、スピンコーターやロールコーター等を用いればよい。
次に、上記(2)工程によって形成された塗布層27中に、上記(1)工程によって背面基板22上に形成された間隙部材24の第1部位24Aを埋め込む(図18(B))。塗布層27がある程度の流動性を有する場合、第1部位24Aの周囲に自然に流動して埋め込まれる。
あるいは、より確実に埋め込むためには、間隙部材24の第1部位24Aを塗布層27中に埋め込んだ状態で、間隙部材24と表示基板20とを相対的に、該表示基板20の面に沿った特定方向(図18(C)中、矢印X1方向)に移動させた後に、逆方向(図18(D)中、矢印X2方向)に移動させて、相対的に互いに往復させる(図18(C)〜図18(E)参照)。
この処理によって、間隙部材24の第1部位24Aが、塗布層27中に埋め込まれ、表示基板20における背面基板22と向かい合う側の面と間隙部材24における表示基板20に向かい合う側の端面との隙間に該塗布層27の構成材料が充填されると共に、該間隙部材24の表示基板20に向かい合う端面から第1部位24Aを包含するように連続して該塗布層27が設けられた状態となる。
次に、間隙部材24の第1部位24Aの埋め込まれた塗布層27に、該塗布層27に含まれる刺激硬化性材料を硬化させる刺激を付与することで、該塗布層27を硬化させて、保持層26とする。
Claims (5)
- 一対の基板と、
前記一対の基板の間隙を保持すると共に、前記一対の基板の向かい合う方向の一端から他端に渡る全領域のうちの、該一対の基板の向かい合う方向に直交する方向の断面積が該一対の基板の何れか一方側に連続する他の部位の断面積より大きい第1部位を有する間隙部材と、
前記一対の基板の少なくとも一方の基板に設けられ、該基板と前記間隙部材の端面との間に充填されると共に該間隙部材の該端面から前記第1部位を包含するように設けられ、該間隙部材における前記一対の基板の向かい合う方向の端部を保持する保持層と、
前記一対の基板間に封入される液体中に分散された粒子群の付着を抑制するための表面層と、
を備えた表示媒体。 - 前記保持層が、導電性を有する請求項1に記載の表示媒体。
- 前記一対の基板間に封入された液体を更に備えた請求項1または請求項2に記載の表示媒体。
- 請求項1〜請求項3の何れか1項に記載の表示媒体の作製方法であって、
基板上に、刺激の付与により硬化する刺激硬化性材料を含む塗布層を形成する工程と、
前記塗布層中に、前記間隙部材における前記第1部位を埋没させる工程と、
前記塗布層に刺激を付与する工程と、
を有する表示媒体の作製方法。 - 請求項1〜請求項3の何れか1項に記載の表示媒体と、
前記表示媒体における前記一対の基板間に電圧を印加する電圧印加手段と、
を備えた表示装置。
