Abstract
【解決手段】周辺領域400では対向基板200をその基板面が液晶層500とは反対方向になだらかに傾斜するような構成とする。これにより、表示領域300から周辺領域400にかけてセルギャップをゆるやかに大きく変化させることができるので、表示領域の内周部でセルギャップが急激に変化することはない。また、液晶の注入量が多い場合には周辺領域400の液晶余剰領域700に余剰分が充填されるのでセルギャップの変動が抑制される。

Description
図1の平面図は、第1の実施の形態に係る液晶表示装置のアレイ基板の構成を概略的に示している。アレイ基板100上には点線で示した表示領域300が設けられ、表示領域300の周囲には周辺領域400が設けられる。ここでは表示領域300を囲むように接着剤120が切れ目なく配置される。これにより、接着剤120の内壁で囲まれた領域では液晶が領域外に漏れ出すことがないので、液晶滴下注入法により所定量の液晶を滴下してアレイ基板100と対向する基板とを貼り合わせることが可能となる。
次に、上記実施の形態の理解を容易にするために比較例としての液晶表示装置について説明する。比較例の液晶表示装置の基本的な構成は、第1の実施の形態で説明したものと同様である。第1の実施の形態と異なる点は、図5の断面図に示すように、両基板を貼り合わせる前では対向基板200の基板面が傾斜していない点である。更に、対向基板200上の表示領域300ではカラーフィルタ211の色層や遮光層210、透明電極などが緊密に形成されているため、周辺領域400と比べた場合には凹凸の程度が大きく異なっている。アレイ基板100上に形成された均一な高さのスペーサー600は表示領域300内では対向基板200に接触するが周辺領域400では接触しない。このため、スペーサー600が突き当たる対向基板200の凹凸に起因してスペーサー600として機能する部分と機能しない部分が生じてしまう。
そこで、本実施の形態では、表示領域300ではスペーサー600により両基板を支持し周辺領域400ではスペーサー600及び構造物230により両基板を支持して、周辺領域400では対向基板200をその基板面が液晶層500とは反対方向になだらかに傾斜するような構成とする。これにより、基板面に対して均一な圧力をかけて両基板を貼り合わせた場合には、表示領域300から周辺領域400にかけてセルギャップをゆるやかに大きく変化させることができるので、表示領域の内周部でセルギャップが急激に変化することはない。よって、表示領域内外のセルギャップの差に起因した表示ムラを防止できる。
次に、第2の実施の形態に係る液晶表示装置について説明する。この液晶表示装置の基本的な構成は、第1の実施の形態で説明したものと同様である。以下では、第1の実施の形態と異なる点を中心に説明する。

Claims (4)
- 対向して配置された2枚の基板と、
前記2枚の基板の間隙に挟持された液晶層と、
前記2枚の基板の表面に設けられた表示領域と、
前記表示領域の周囲に設けられた周辺領域と、を備え、
前記周辺領域では前記2枚の基板のどちらか一方の基板の基板面は、他の基板の基板面とは反対方向になだらかに傾斜していることを特徴とする液晶表示装置。 - 前記傾斜基板に対向する基板上では液晶層側にスペーサーが配置されたものであって、
前記周辺領域では前記傾斜基板上の液晶層側に前記スペーサーに対向して構造物が配置されることを特徴とする請求項1に記載の液晶表示装置。 - 前記傾斜基板に対向する基板上では液晶層側にスペーサーが配置されたものであって、前記周辺領域では前記スペーサーの高さよりも高い構造物が配置されていることを特徴とする請求項1に記載の液晶表示装置。
- 前記2枚の基板は、
その両基板の間に前記表示領域を囲むように切れ目なく配置された接着剤により貼り合わせられることを特徴とする請求項1乃至3のいずれかに記載の液晶表示装置。
