Abstract
アクティブマトリクスLEDディスプレイは、表示素子の輝度を検出するための光依存性デバイスと、画素の駆動トランジスタの閾値電圧を測定するための閾値電圧測定回路とを有する。このようにして、表示素子のエージング補償は、光学フィードバック経路により提供され、駆動トランジスタの閾値電圧の変動補償は、閾値電圧の測定によって提供される。これは、閾値電圧の変動に対する信頼性のある補償機構を提供し、一方で、エージング補償も提供する。
Description
本発明は、アクティブマトリクスディスプレイ装置、具体的には、それだけではないが、夫々の画素に結合された薄膜スイッチングトランジスタを有するアクティブマトリクス電界発光ディスプレイ装置に関する。
電界発光や光放射型の表示素子を用いるマトリクスディスプレイ装置が良く知られる。前記表示素子は、例えば高分子化合物質を用いた有機薄膜電界発光素子、又は従来のIII−V族半導体化合物を用いた発光ダイオード(LED)であっても良い。有機電界発光物質、特に高分子化合物における最近の発展は、特に映像ディスプレイ装置に使用されるべきそれらの能力を実証している。一般的に、これらの物質は、一対の電極間に挟まれた半導体共役高分子の一つ又はそれ以上の層を有する。前記電極の一方は透明であり、他方は空孔又は電子を高分子化合物の層に入れるのに適した物質である。
高分子化合物質は、CVD処理を用いて、あるいは、簡単に水溶性共役高分子の溶液を用いたスピンコーティング技術によって、作られ得る。また、インクジェット印刷が使用されても良い。有機電界発光物質は、それらが表示機能及びスイッチング機能の両方を提供する能力を有するように、ダイオードのようなI−V特性を示すよう配置可能であり、従って、パッシブ型ディスプレイにおいて使用可能である。代替的には、これらの物質は、表示素子、及び該表示素子を流れる電流を制御するスイッチングデバイスを夫々が有する画素を有するアクティブマトリクスディスプレイ装置に用いられても良い。
この形式のディスプレイ装置は、従来のアナログ駆動方式が前記表示素子へ制御可能な電流を供給するように、電流駆動型表示素子を有する。画素構造の部分として電流源トランジスタを設けることが知られる。この電流源トランジスタに供給されているゲート電圧は、前記表示素子を流れる電流を決める。蓄積キャパシタは、アドレス指定相の後にゲート電圧を保持する。
図1は、アクティブマトリクスアドレス指定型電界発光ディスプレイ装置用の従来の画素回路を示す。ディスプレイ装置は、規則正しく間隔を空けられた画素の行及び列のマトリクス配列を有するパネルを有する。該画素は、ブロック1によって表わされ、関連するスイッチング手段と共に電界発光表示素子2を有し、行(選択)及び列(データ)のアドレス導電体4及び6の交差する組の間の共通部分に置かれている。簡単化のため、数個の画素しか図には示されていない。実際には、画素の数百の行及び列が存在しても良い。画素1は、行の走査駆動回路8及び列のデータ駆動回路9を有する周辺の駆動回路によって、行及び列のアドレス導電体の集合を介してアドレス指定される。これらの駆動回路は、導電体の夫々の集合の終端に接続されている。
電界発光(EL)表示素子2は、ここではダイオード素子(LED)として表わされ、有機電界発光物質の一つ又はそれ以上のアクティブ層が挟まれている一対の電極を有する有機発光ダイオードを有する。前記配列の表示素子は、関連するアクティブマトリクス回路と共に絶縁支持材の片側に載せられている。表示素子の陰極又は陽極のどちらかは、透明な導電物質で形成されている。前記支持材は、ガラスのような透明な物質から作られ、基材に最も近い表示素子2の電極は、ITOのような透明の導電物質から成っても良い。故に、電界発光層により発生した光は、支持材のもう一方の側で見る人に対して可視的であるように、これらの電極及び支持材を介して伝達される。一般的に、有機電界発光物質層の厚さは、100nmから200nmの間である。素子2に使用可能な適切な有機電界発光物質の代表実施例が知られ、EP−A−0717446(特許文献1)に記述されている。WO96/36959(特許文献2)に記述されるような共役高分子材も使用可能である。
図2は、電圧アドレス指定動作を提供するための従来の画素及び駆動回路配置を、簡単化された回路図形式で示す。夫々の画素1は、EL表示素子2及び結合された駆動回路を有する。駆動回路は、行導電体4の行アドレスパルスによりオンとされるアドレストランジスタ16を有する。アドレストランジスタ16がオンとされると、列導電体6の電圧は、画素の残りへ渡ることができる。特に、アドレストランジスタ16は、列導電体の電圧を電流源20へ供給する。電流源20は、駆動トランジスタ22及び蓄積キャパシタ24を有する。列電圧は、駆動トランジスタ22のゲートへ供給され、ゲートは、行アドレスパルスが終了した後でさえ、蓄積キャパシタ24によってこの電圧に保たれる。
この回路の駆動トランジスタ22は、n形TFTとして実施され、蓄積キャパシタ24は、ゲート−ソース間電圧を一定に保つ。これにより、トランジスタを流れる一定のソース−ドレイン間電流が得られる。従って、トランジスタは、画素の所望の電流源動作を提供する。n形駆動トランジスタは、アモルファスシリコンを用いて実施されても良い。駆動トランジスタは、p形トランジスタとして実施されても良く、これは、通常は、ポリシリコンを用いた実施に適する。当然のことながら、他の回路変更が可能である。
上記の基本的な画素回路では、ポリシリコンに基づく回路に関して、トランジスタのチャネルにおけるポリシリコン粒子の統計的分布に起因して、トランジスタの閾値電圧が変動する。しかし、ポリシリコントランジスタは、電流及び電圧のストレスを受けて極めて安定しており、従って、閾値電圧は、実質的に一定のままである。
アクティブマトリクスLEDディスプレイに対するアモルファスシリコン画素回路の実施に大いに関心がある。これは、LEDデバイスに対する電流要求がデバイス効率の改善に伴って減少しているので、可能となってきている。例えば、近年、有機LEDデバイス及び溶液性有機LEDデバイスは、燐光の使用により極めて高い効率を示す。閾値電圧の変動は、少なくとも基板上の短い範囲に亘って、アモルファスシリコントランジスタでは小さい。しかし、閾値電圧は、電圧ストレスに対して非常に敏感である。駆動トランジスタに必要とされる閾値電圧を超える高電圧の印加は、閾値電圧の大きな変化を引き起こす。閾値電圧は、表示される画像の情報コンテンツに依存する。このエージングは、アモルファスシリコントランジスタにより駆動されるLEDディスプレイでの深刻な問題である。
トランジスタ特性の変動に加えて、LED自体の差動エージングも存在する。これは、電流印加後の発光物質の効率低下に起因する。ほとんどの場合で、LEDに流される電流及び電荷が大きくなるほど、効率は下がる。
LED物質のエージングを補償する電圧アドレス指定型画素回路が提案されてきた。例えば、様々な画素回路が提案されており、その中で、画素は光検知素子を有する。この素子は、表示素子の光出力に応答し、アドレス期間の間ディスプレイの総合的な光出力を制御するように、光出力に応じて蓄積キャパシタに蓄えられた電荷を放出するよう作動する。図3は、この目的のために、p形駆動トランジスタを用いた画素配置の一例を示す。このような画素構造の例は、WO01/20591(特許文献3)及びEP1096466(特許文献4)に記述されている。
図3の画素回路において、フォトダイオード27は、キャパシタ24に蓄えられたゲート電圧を放電する。EL表示素子2は、駆動トランジスタ22のゲート電圧が閾値電圧に達すると、もはや発光しなくなり、そのとき、蓄積キャパシタ24は、放電を停止する。電荷がフォトダイオード27から放出される速度は、表示素子の出力の関数であり、従って、フォトダイオード27は、感光性フィードバックデバイスとして機能する。総合的な光出力は、フォトダイオード27の作用を考慮して:

また、エージングに起因して使用される駆動トランジスタの閾値電圧の変動を補償する電圧アドレス指定型画素回路に関して、多数の提案がされている。これらの提案の幾つかは、駆動トランジスタの閾値電圧が一般的にフレーム毎に測定されるように、更なる回路素子を夫々の画素に導入する。閾値電圧を測定する1つの方法は、アドレス指定系列の一部としての駆動トランジスタをオンに切り換えること、及び駆動トランジスタの電流が駆動トランジスタのゲート−ソース接合間のキャパシタを放電するように駆動トランジスタを分離することである。ある時点で、キャパシタは、キャパシタが駆動トランジスタの閾値電圧を保つ点まで放電され、駆動トランジスタは導通を停止する。そのとき、閾値電圧は、キャパシタに蓄えられている(即ち、測定されている)。その場合、この閾値電圧は、駆動トランジスタへ供給されるゲート電圧が閾値電圧を考慮に入れるように、(先と同じく画素内の回路素子を用いて)データ入力電圧に加えられる。
本発明に従って、表示画素の配列を有するアクティブマトリクスディスプレイ装置が提案される。夫々の画素は:
電流駆動型発光表示素子;
該表示素子に電流を流す駆動トランジスタ;
該駆動トランジスタをアドレス指定するために使用されるべき画素駆動電圧を蓄える蓄積キャパシタ;
前記表示素子の輝度を検出するための光依存性デバイス;及び
前記画素駆動電圧を導き出すよう画素データ電圧との組み合わせのための補償電圧を発生させ、且つ、前記駆動トランジスタの閾値電圧変動と前記表示素子のエージングを補償するように前記画素駆動電圧を印加する補償回路;
を有する。
電流駆動型発光表示素子;

この配置は、表示素子のエージング及び閾値電圧の変動の両方を補償する。
望ましくは、前記補償回路は、前記画素駆動電圧を導き出すよう画素データ信号との組み合わせのための前記駆動トランジスタの閾値電圧を測定する閾値電圧測定回路を有する。
この回路では、表示素子のエージング補償は、光学フィードバック経路によって提供され、駆動トランジスタの閾値変動の補償は、閾値電圧の測定によって提供される。これは、閾値電圧の変動に対する信頼性のある補償機構を提供し、一方、エージング補償も提供する。
放電トランジスタが、前記蓄積キャパシタを放電し、それによって前記駆動トランジスタをオフに切り換えるために設けられても良い。この場合には、放電トランジスタの動作タイミングは、光出力を制御するために使用され、このタイミングは、光学フィードバックシステムを実施するように光出力に依存することができる。
従って、閾値補償は、画素のアドレス指定の間に実行され、一方、エージング補償は、画素の駆動中に実行される。例えば、前記光依存性デバイスは、前記表示素子の光出力に依存して前記放電トランジスタへ印加されるゲート電圧を変化させることにより、前記放電トランジスタの動作タイミングを制御することができる。
タイミングスイッチが、前記放電トランジスタのゲートと前記光依存性デバイスとの間に設けられても良い。十分な電荷が光依存性デバイスで発生すると、タイミングスイッチは閉じられ、それによって、放電トランジスタを作動させる。
夫々の画素は、前記駆動トランジスタのソースと検知ラインとの間に接続された検知トランジスタを更に有しても良い。その場合、この検知ラインは、閾値電圧測定回路に接続されている。駆動トランジスタがオンとされると、電流が検知トランジスタを通って閾値電圧測定回路へ流れることができる。この電流は、また、例えば、同期したランプ信号を駆動トランジスタのゲートへ供給することによって、閾値電圧を測定するために使用され得る。
他の実施例では、前記光依存性デバイスは、前記駆動トランジスタのゲートとソースとの間でスイッチに直列接続されている。スイッチが閉じられると、光依存性デバイスは、ゲート−ソース間の容量(寄生容量又は更なる構成部品であっても良い。)を放電するよう動作する。従って、更なる電流が任意の出力の画素によって引き込まれ、この更なる電流は光出力に依存する。従って、この回路は、光出力の検出方法を提供する。望ましくは、前記蓄積キャパシタは、前記駆動トランジスタのゲートとソースとの間に接続されている。
この配置では、望ましくは、前記補償回路は、ランプ電圧入力を前記画素へ印加するための手段と、前記光依存性デバイスの出力を測定し、それによって所定の表示素子輝度に対応する前記ランプ電圧入力を決定するための手段とを有する。
この配置では、閾値電圧及びエージングの補償は、画素アドレス指定相の間に実行される。
更なる他の実施例において、前記光依存性デバイスは、電源ラインと検知ラインと間で検知トランジスタに直列接続されている。光依存性デバイスで発生した電流は、光出力の測定を提供するよう、検知ライン上で測定可能である。
この配置では、望ましくは、前記補償回路は、入力として所定の電圧を前記画素へ印加するための手段と、前記光依存性デバイスの出力を測定し、それによって前記所定の電圧入力に対応する光出力を決定するための手段とを有する。その場合、前記決定された光出力は、前記駆動トランジスタの閾値電圧及び前記表示素子のエージングを補償する補償機構を得るために使用される。
この配置では、閾値電圧及びエージングの補償は、先と同じく、画素アドレス指定相の間に実行される。
従って、本発明の幾つかの実施例において、光学フィードバックは、画素の照射の間に、照射の期間を調整するために使用される。他の実施例では、光学フィードバックは、画素のアドレス指定の間に、照射の期間に所要の駆動信号を発生させるために、画素駆動信号の変更に使用される。しかし、夫々の場合において、光学フィードバックは、画素の特性の完全な補償を提供するよう、閾値検知と組み合わされている。
本発明は、アモルファスシリコンn形トランジスタが画素回路において使用されることを許容する。
本発明は、また、夫々が駆動トランジスタ及び電流駆動型発光表示素子を有する表示画素の配列を有するアクティブマトリクスディスプレイ装置を駆動する方法を提供する。当該方法は、前記画素の夫々をアドレス指定するために:
少なくとも前記駆動トランジスタの閾値電圧を考慮に入れる画素駆動電圧を導き出すステップ;
前記表示素子の光出力を検知するステップ;及び

以下、本発明を、添付の図面を参照して実施例により説明する。
留意すべきは、添付の図面は概略であり、実寸で描かれていないことである。添付の図面の部品の夫々の寸法及び形状は、明瞭さの目的及び描画の便宜のため、サイズが実際よりも大きく又は小さく示されている。
図4は、本発明の第1のディスプレイ装置の画素を示す。画素は、従来のアドレストランジスタ16、駆動トランジスタ22、表示素子2及び蓄積キャパシタ24(トランジスタ22の寄生容量であっても良い。)を有する。放電トランジスタ28は、(総合的な)光出力が所望のレベルに達した徴候に応じて蓄積キャパシタ24を放電するために設けられている。
放電トランジスタ28は、表示素子の輝度を検出するために、光依存性デバイス、具体的にはフォトダイオード27によって主に制御される。フォトダイオード27が照射される間(一方、トランジスタ30、32はオフである。)に、フォトダイオード電流は、トランジスタ34のゲート−ソース間の寄生容量を、そのトランジスタがオンとされるまで、変化させる。これは、放電トランジスタ28をオンに切り換え、放電トランジスタ28は、キャパシタ24を放電する。従って、トランジスタ34は、放電トランジスタ28のゲートと光依存性デバイス27との間のタイミングスイッチとして機能する。十分な電荷が光依存性デバイスで発生すると、タイミングスイッチは、閉じられ、それによって放電トランジスタを作動させる。
光依存性デバイスは、示されているフォトダイオードの代わりに、ダイオード接続されたフォトトランジスタであっても良い。トランジスタ34は、ダイオード接続され、代わりに、ダイオードとして実施されうる。
より明るいディスプレイ出力は、トランジスタの寄生容量のより急速な充電と、それ故の駆動トランジスタ22のより高速なオフへの切り換えをもたらす。従って、フィードバック機構が実施され、これは、表示素子のエージングを補償する。
回路は、駆動トランジスタ22の閾値電圧を測定し、且つ、画素駆動電圧を導き出すよう画素データ信号を変更するための、閾値電圧測定回路を更に有する。従って、駆動トランジスタの閾値電圧の変動に対する補償が、閾値電圧の測定によって提供される。
駆動トランジスタ22の閾値電圧を測定するために、検知ライン40が仮想アース電流センサ50に接続されている。駆動トランジスタ22のソースは、検知トランジスタ42を介して検知ライン40へ接続されている。センサ50は、非常に小さな電流が検知され得るように、検知ライン40での電圧における如何なる変化も放置することなく、電流を測定する。電流センサは、ランプ電圧発生器52の動作を制御する。
ディスプレイの夫々のフィールド期間の開始時に、画素回路が、閾値電圧測定動作を実行するために使用される。
閾値電圧測定動作のために、アドレストランジスタ16及び検知トランジスタ42がオンとされる。そのとき、駆動トランジスタ22のゲートは、駆動トランジスタ22がオフとされるように、その時点で駆動トランジスタ22の閾値電圧よりも低くなるよう配置されているデータ列6の電圧に放電される。LED表示素子2の陽極は、また、接地である検知ライン40の電圧に保たれる。電源レール26はハイ(high)である。
その場合、ランプ発生器52は、例えば、バッファの電圧出力を増大させることによって、あるいは、列へ電荷を注入することによって、線形に又は段階的に、列6の電圧を増大させる。駆動トランジスタ22のゲートは、駆動トランジスタがオフとなるまで列電圧に追随し、そのとき、電流は、検知ライン40へ注入され、電流センサ50によって検出される。このとき、ランプ発生器52の電圧出力が保存され、駆動トランジスタの閾値電圧の目安として使用される。
その場合、測定された閾値電圧は、アナログ又はデジタルのどちらかの領域で、例えばソース駆動回路ではデジタル処理で、画素に対する所望のデータ電圧へ加えられる。閾値電圧は、また、画素自体において(アナログに)加算されても良い。
この方法では、複数の表示画素に対する画素駆動信号は、測定された閾値電圧に応じて変更される。
図4の回路は、2つのモードで使用される。アドレス指定モードでは、閾値電圧は、上述したように測定され、次に、この閾値電圧は、蓄積キャパシタ24を新たな補償値に充電するよう、画素駆動電圧へ加えられる。続く駆動モードでは、ディスプレイは、駆動トランジスタ22が光学フィードバックシステムによってオフとされるまで、この補償値へ駆動される。
図4の回路に対する第1のタイミング図を図5に示す。
制御トランジスタ16、42、30,32は、全て、単一の制御ラインによって制御される。この制御ラインは、これらのトランジスタの全てを、アドレス指定相の間はオンとし、続く画素駆動期間の間はオフとする。
アドレス指定相の開始時に、上述した電圧ランプが列6上に置かれる。電流フローが検知ライン40で検出されると、ランプレベルが保存され、画素駆動電圧Vdは閾値電圧レベルへ加えられる。結果として得られる電圧は、蓄積キャパシタ24の充電のために列6に供給される。アドレス指定相の間、陽極は、表示素子がオフとされるように、検知ライン40の電圧(例えば0V。)に保たれる。
トランジスタ30、32は、トランジスタ34(タイミングスイッチ)及び放電トランジスタ28がアドレス指定の間回路動作に関与しないように、トランジスタ34及び放電トランジスタ28がアドレス指定の間オフとされていることを確実にする。
トランジスタ34は、放電トランジスタ28のターンオンを速め、それによって、表示素子2の高速なターンオフを達成するよう設けられている。放電トランジスタ28のゲートがゆっくりと充電することを許容される場合には、電流はキャパシタ24から引き出され、この電流は、光出力を減少させ、それによってフォトダイオード27での光電流を減少させうる。これは、フィードバックループを低速にする傾向がある。従って、トランジスタ34は、フィードバックループに対して高速なターンオフ特性を備える。従って、放電トランジスタ28は、トランジスタ34がオンとされるまで、フィードバックループの影響を受けない。このことは、放電トランジスタ28の閾値電圧への回路動作の如何なる依存性をも取り除く。ダイオード接続されたトランジスタ34の使用は、唯一の更なるアドレスラインと共に回路動作を可能とする。
アドレス指定相の終了時に、制御トランジスタは、全てオフとされ、表示素子2はオンとされる。光学フィードバック機構は、また、駆動トランジスタ22が薄暗い画素に対してよりも、明るい画素に対してより高速にオフとされるように作動し、それによってエージングに起因する画素の輝度の変動を補償する。
閾値電圧へ加えられたデータ電圧は、所望の回路動作が達成されるように、光学フィードバック回路の作用を考慮に入れることがある。
図4の回路に対する第2のタイミング図を図6に示す。
この場合には、閾値電圧が測定された時点で、対応する負の段差60は、変更されていないデータ電圧のデータライン6への印加がデータ電圧と(事実上、検知ライン40とデータライン6との間に接続されている)キャパシタ24に蓄えられている閾値電圧との組み合わせをもたらすように、検知ライン40に供給される。
上記実施例において、閾値補償はアドレス指定の間に実行され、エージング補償は画素駆動の間に実行される。
図7は、第2の実施例を示す。図7では、全ての補償がアドレス指定相の間に実行される。
フォトダイオード27は、駆動トランジスタ22のゲートとソースとの間でトランジスタスイッチ62に直列接続されている。スイッチ62が閉じられると、フォトダイオードは、ゲート−ソース間キャパシタ24を放電する。従って、画素によって引き込まれる電流は光出力に依存するので、引き込まれた電流の大きさは、画素の輝度を決定するために使用される。フォトダイオードの放電電流は、検知ライン40で測定可能であり、これは、表示素子の電流とは無関係である。トランジスタ42がオンとされることで定電圧がLEDの陽極に存在するので、表示電流は一定である。このようにして、フォトダイオードの電流は、測定可能であり、それに伴い、表示素子の輝度の大きさを与える。任意の駆動状態に対する画素の輝度を考慮することによって、画素のエージングの大きさが得られる。
この回路は、駆動トランジスタの閾値電圧を測定するための同じ回路素子を有する。しかし、輝度における画素のエージング効果の大きさは、また、補償が列駆動部で実行されるように、アドレス指定の間に得られ、光学フィードバック機構が画素駆動の間に動作する必要性はない。
制御トランジスタ16、42、62は、先と同じく、単一の制御ラインによって制御される。この回路では、表示素子2は、光学フィードバック信号を供給するために、アドレス指定の間に駆動されなければならない。最も容易に、画素は、任意の出力輝度に対応する任意の検知ライン電流に対して所望のゲート−ソース間電圧を見つけるようアドレス指定されても良い。
図8は、図7の回路に対するタイミング図の一例を示す。図のように、制御トランジスタ16、42、62は、全て、ライン6上の電圧が駆動トランジスタのゲート−ソース間に印加され、如何なる光依存性電流も検知ライン40において測定されるように、アドレス指定の間はオンである。
ランプ電圧はライン6へ印加され、ランプ電圧は、正確な電流が検知ラインにより検出されると停止される。その場合、この時点でのゲート−ソース間電圧63は、既知の輝度に対応し、この情報は、駆動トランジスタの閾値電圧及びLED物質のエージングの両方を補償するために使用され得る。その場合、この情報は、画素に印加されるデータを変更するために使用され得る。
図9に示された他の実施例では、フォトダイオード27は、電源ライン26と検知ライン40との間で検知トランジスタ42に直列接続されている。光依存性デバイス27で発生した電流は、光出力の大きさを提供するよう、検知ライン上で測定され得る。
この回路では、データライン6上に供給される電流の電流検知は、駆動トランジスタ22のターンオンを検出するために使用される。検知ライン40を流れる電流の電流検知は、(任意の駆動状態に対する)表示素子の輝度の大きさを提供するために使用される。
この回路内の蓄積キャパシタ24は、駆動トランジスタ22のゲートとドレインとの間にある。従って、光出力は、表示素子2の陽極電圧がゲート−ソース間電圧に影響を及ぼしうるので、表示素子の陽極電圧に依存しうる。しかし、光出力の大きさは、画素駆動信号が、LED物質のエージング及び駆動トランジスタの閾値電圧の変動のみならず、LEDの陽極電圧の変動をも考慮するよう変更されることを可能にする。
図10は、図9の回路に対するタイミング図の一例を示す。制御トランジスタ16、42は、両方とも、表示素子2がデータライン6上の信号に応じて発光し、同時に、フォト電流が検知ライン40で測定されるように、アドレス指定の間はオンである。図10に示されているように、基準電圧が、最初に列6に印加される。この基準電圧は、駆動トランジスタの閾値電圧を超えるほど高く、LEDからのフラッシュを生じさせる。LEDからのフラッシュは、光電流が測定されることを可能にする。
測定された光電流から、印加された基準電圧に対応する予期された輝度と実際に測定された輝度との間の差が決定される。この差は、矢印63により表されているように、データ電圧に必要とされる調整を計算するために使用される。
本発明の幾つかの実施例において、光学フィードバックは、画素の照射の間に、照射の期間を調整するために使用される。他の実施例では、光学フィードバックは、照射の期間に所要の駆動信号を発生させるために、画素駆動信号の変更に使用される。夫々の場合で、光学フィードバックは、画素特性の完全な補償を提供するよう、閾値検知と組み合わされる。
本発明は、アモルファスシリコンn形トランジスタが画素回路で使用されることを可能にし、回路は、n形トランジスタのみを用いて示されている。しかし、例えば多結晶シリコン、水素化アモルファスシリコン、ポリシリコン及び等しい半導体ポリマーのような、多数の技術が可能である。本発明は、n形アモルファスシリコントランジスタを用いて駆動回路の実施を可能とする際に格段の利点を有するが、他の技術における実施及びp形トランジスタによる実施が幾つかの場合で好ましいこともある。これらは、全て、本願の特許請求の範囲の適用範囲内にある。
ディスプレイ装置は、ポリマーLED装置、有機LED装置、燐光体含有物質及び他の発光構造体であっても良い。
上記回路において、回路接続は、LEDの陽極に対して成され、これは、共通の陰極が使用されることを可能にする。代わりに、陰極に対して成された回路接続を有する構造化された陰極を使用することが望まれても良い。必要とされる回路変更は、当業者には明らかである。
上記回路において、閾値電圧及びLEDエージングを考慮に入れるための画素駆動電圧の変更は、表示画素配列の外部、例えば列駆動回路において、実行される。代替案は、画素において補償を提供すべきである。様々な機構が閾値電圧の補償のために提案されており、一般的に、データ電圧が供給されるキャパシタに直列な1つのキャパシタに閾値電圧を蓄えるステップを有する。従って、本発明は、外部の閾値電圧測定を用いることができるが、上述した画素駆動信号の変更よりもむしろ、その場合、閾値電圧は、画素回路内のキャパシタに供給され、変更されていないデータ電圧は、データ(列)導電体に供給され得る。
多種多様な変形が当業者には明らかである。

電流駆動型発光表示素子;

前記表示素子の輝度を検出するための光依存性デバイス;及び
前記画素駆動電圧を導き出すよう画素データ電圧との組み合わせのための補償電圧を発生させ、且つ、前記駆動トランジスタの閾値電圧変動と前記表示素子のエージングを補償するように前記画素駆動電圧を印加する補償回路;
