998, 955. Silver salt diffusion transfer processes and materials. GEVAERT PHOTO-PRODUCTEN N.V. Oct. 19, 1961 [oct.20, 1960; Aug.14, 1961], No. 37614/61. Heading G2C. One or each of the contacting surfaces in the transfer process consists of or comprises a chromium salt of carboxymethyl cellulose to facilitate separation of the surfaces and avoid unsharpness in the transferred image, especially after a very short time of contact. Image-receiving and silver halide emulsion materials of various forms have such surfaces. In Example 1 a baryta-coated paper is coated with a suspension formed from from gelatin, hypo, sodium sulphide and cobaltous nitrate and overcoated with a solution of the sodium salt of carboxymethyl cellulose with potassium chromic sulphate and saponine to form the receiving material, and this is laid on an exposed emulsion layer and sprayed with developer for 2 seconds to give a clear positive after 10 seconds of squeezing contact. Twenty further examples describe variations mainly using other, similar, salts; ten of them, however, include the use of soluble strontium salts in the receiving materials, and Example 21 has strontium chloride in a silver chloride emulsion layer which is overlaid with an alginate/carboxymethyl cellulose layer containing a chromic salt, for use with a more normal nuclei containing layer.
