A photographic silver halide emulsion layer containing not more than 0.1 g. of silver per square metre is exposed and developed in the presence of a developing agent, a silver halide solvent and a silver salt addition to that contained in the emulsion, or a silver salt complex formed from the silver halide solvent and the additional silver salt, so as to produce an image in which at least<SP> 2</SP>/ 3 of the silver is supplied by the additional silver salt or complex therefrom. The additional silver salt may be supplied from a separate conventional silver halide emulsion layer which, together with the exposed material, may be wetted with a developer solution containing a silver halide solvent and thereafter the layers are pressed into contact. Alternatively, the two layers may be coated one on the other. In Example 3, the exposed silver halide emulsion is processed by dipping it first into a solution of sodium thiosulphate to which silver chloride has been added, and then into a conventional developer. In Example 4, the developing agent is incorporated into the silver halide emulsion layer and the exposed material is developed with a sodium thiosulphate solution in which silver chloride has been dissolved and to which sodium sulphite and caustic soda have been added. Direct positives are prepared by first uniformly fogging the silver halide emulsion to give silver nuclei. Thus, in Example 5, silver nitrate is added to a gelatin solution and forms silver chloride by reaction with the inherent sodium chloride in the gelatin. The solution is fogged by exposure to light, o-nitrobenzyl pyridinium chloride is added and the emulsion cast on a support.
