Abstract

778,792. Photographic reversal transfer; silver halide emulsions and developers. KODAK, Ltd. July 8, 1955 [July 15, 1954], No. 19785/55. Drawings to Specification. Class 98(2) In transfer from unexposed areas of an emulsion layer to a receiving layer to form a positive silver or silver compound image therein during development in presence of a silver halide solvent, a 3-pyrazolidone and an ascorbic acid developing agent are used together, and may have been originally present in either the emulsion layer or the developer. Separately these agents have too low developing energy for the process. Developers containing the two agents particularly with hypo as silver halide solvent may be used to develop silver halide emulsion layers in the ordinary way, and subsequent washing of the latter is unnecessary. Potassium iodide may replace the hypo for this. Fifteen examples illustrate the transfer process, some of these being concerned for comparison purposes with one only of the above pair of developing agents and with hydroquinone as developer. In Example 1 an exposed bromoiodide negative emulsion. layer, and a baryta coated paper treated with a mixture formed from silica, sodium sulphide, cadmium acetate, lead acetate and water as receiving layer, are immersed for six seconds in a developer containing sodium sulphite, d-iso-ascorbic acid, hypo, sodium hydroxide, potassium bromide, 1- phenyl-3-pyrazolidone and benzotriazole, pressed together and separated after one minute to show the positive image in the receiving layer, such image consisting of both silver sulphide formed by precipitation and silver formed by nuclei effect. In Example 4 a gelatino-silver chloride emulsion containing the pair of developing agents is treated for transfer similarly except that immersion is effected into a solution containing hypo, sodium hydroxide and sodium sulphite only. In Example 9 the developer of the invention contains high viscosity sodium carboxymethyl cellulose for " sandwich spreading between rollers. Numerous other 3-pyrazolidones, silver precipitants, nuclei forming materials, and silver halide solvents are quoted. Specifications 757,271 and 767,705 [Group IV(b)] are referred to. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 542,502.
