712,374. Direct positive photographic images. KODAK, Ltd. June 27, 1952 [June 27, 1951], No. 16262/52. Drawings to Specification, Class 98(2) A direct positive photographic image is produced by exposing to an object or image a sensitive silver salt emulsion layer of the type defined in Specification 645,877 and developing it to form a direct positive image according to any of the methods of Specifications 645,877, 702,162 and 712,355 in the presence of one or more sulphonated hydroquinones (including alkali metal salts thereof) and substantially in the absence of unsubstituted hydroquinone. The presence of one or more hydroquinone sulphonates during development enables the contrast of the direct positive image produced to be varied. An exposed internal latent image emulsion is developed in a solution containing an alkali metal salt of sulphonated hydroquinone, e.g. sodium or potassium hydroquinone monosulphonate or sodium hydroquinone disulphonate, N- methyl-p-aminophenol sulphate (variation of the concentration of this ingredient varies the contrast of the image), and a hydrazine as disclosed in Specifications 702,162 and 712,355, e.g. phenylhydrazine or #-methylsulphonamidoethylhydrazine hydrochloride, α-naphthylhydrazine, 1-naphthylhydrazine-7-sulphonic acid, or p-(#-methylsulphonamidoethyl)-phenylhydrazine. The pH should be 10 to 13, preferably 10.5 to 11.5. Two developing solutions specified contain p-(#-methylsulphonamidoethyl)-phenylhydrazine, N-methyl-p-aminophenol sulphate, sodium hydroquinone monosulphonate, sodium sulphite, 5-methylbenztriazole, and sodium hydroxide. Specifications 581,772, 581,773 and 635,841 also are referred to.
