Abstract

701,051. Photographic process. FARBENFABRIKEN BAYER. March 29, 1951 [March 29, 1950], No. 7356/51. Class 98(2) Photographic positive silver images are produced by developing with an alkaline solution in the presence of a developing agent an exposed silver halide emulsion layer in close contact with one side of a thin water-permeable sheet of which the other side is in close contact with a non-lightsensitive water-permeable colloid layer containing a silver halide solvent, part of the unexposed silver halide being dissolved by the silver halide solvent which has diffused through the thin waterpermeable sheet to the emulsion layer and being developed in the water-permeable sheet to provide a positive silver image therein, The thin sheet, which may be of regenerated cellulose or paper, may contain development nuclei, e.g: colloidal silver or gold colloidal silver sulphide, selenide, or telluride, or substances forming development nuclei during development, e.g. sodium sulphide. Substances suitable as development nuclei may have been produced in the paper during sizing. Development nuclei may also be incorporated in the colloid layer. The developing agent may be incorporated, wholly or in part, in the emulsion, and development effected in an alkaline solution. At least part of the silver halide solvent may be added to the developer, and tone-modifying substances, e.g. mercapto compounds, may be added to the emulsion or the thin water-permeable sheet. In an example, a paper support 1 is coated with a silver chlorobromide emulsion 2 containing hydroquinone, potassium metabisulphite, and 1-phenyl-5-mercaptotetrazole A paper support 5 is coated with a gelatin layer.4 containing hypo. A thin weakly sized typewriting paper 3 is immersed in a weak colloidal silver solution and dried. After exposure of the emulsion 2, the materials are drawn through an aqueous solution of sodium sulphite and sodium hydroxide, the emulsion 2 is contacted with one side of the paper 3, and the layer 4 is contacted with the other side, either in the solution or immediately after leaving it and after about a minute the layers are separated, a positive image having been formed on the layer 3. Only one or two of the three constituent materials need be immersed in the developer. Specifications 305,143, [Class 98(2)], 561,875, and 614,155 are referred to.
