Abstract
714,412. Photographic developers. INTERNATIONAL POLAROID CORPORATION. April 21, 1950 [April 21, 1949], No. 9858/50. Drawings to Specification. Class 98(2) For developing and forming positive prints by transfer of components from a silver halide emulsion, a composition comprises water, a silver halide developing agent, a substance for forming soluble silver complexes with silver halide, solid minute insoluble particles constituting reduction centres or nuclei for accelerating reduction by the developing agent of silver ions in the complexes, and a thickening agent for providing a viscosity sufficient to keep the particles in suspension. The developing agent may be hydroquinone or its chloro or bromo derivative, p-aminophenol or diaminophenol hydrochlorides, metol or mixtures of this with hydroquinone. The complex forming substance may be sodium or ammonium thiosulphate or ammonia. The insoluble particles may be leadcadmium-, zinc-, antimony-, nickel-, cobaltous-, indium-, or cupric sulphide or lead-, cadmium-, or zinc selenide. The thickening agent is normally a film-forming material such as sodium carboxymethyl cellulose; so that the composition, after coating on an exposed silver halide layer, may dry by absorption or evaporation of its water content, to provide a solid layer embodying a positive image, corresponding to the original latent negative image, by transfer and reduction of the non-exposed silver halide from the silver halide layer. The composition may contain other materials such as alkali, sodium sulphite, pigments as titanium dioxide or barium sulphate and a plasticizer such as glycerin. Examples describe production of the compositions and specify citric acid and chlorobenzotriazole as additional constituents thereof. Normally the compositions are packed in rupturable containers which may be attached to a silver halide layer or to another layer, as of film or paper, so that the composition may be spread by pressure over the silver halide layer or between this and the other layer, to lead to rapid direct production of finished positives by methods described also in Specifications 684,591, 684,592 and 703,231.
