Abstract

840,773. Photographic roll films; migratory transfer processes. KODAK Ltd. Oct. 31, 1956 [Oct. 31, 1955], No. 33317/56. Drawings to Specification. Classes 98(1) and 98(2) Photographic material for migratory transfer comprises an opaque support bearing on one side a light-sensitive silver halide emulsion layer and on the reverse side a receiving layer comprising development nuclei or a silver precipitant and a colloid stabilizer absorbed thereto. After development in the presence of alkali and a silver halide solvent, the support is rolled on itself to effect migratory transfer. The colloid stabilizer may be a silicate or aluminate, saponin, mercaptotetrazole, methylene blue or gelatinous zinc oxide. The development nuclei may be colloidal silver or gold or silver sulphide, and the silver precipitant may be sodium sulphide or solenide, zinc sulphide, aminoguanidine sulphate or carbonate, arsenous oxide, sodium stannite, thiourea or its derivatives, substituted hydrazines, mercaptans or xanthates. The lightsensitive layer may contain a tanning or non- tanning developer, or the developer may be with the alkaline/silver solvent processing solutions. The support may be a white pigmented (e.g. titanium dioxide) cellulose acetate or acetate butyrate, or a water proofed baryta paper which bears a heavily pigmented gelatin coating containing a dark pigment such as carbon, alternatively, the dark pigment may be in the support. The film may be constructed as a roll having a leader and trailer paper but no backing paper, the frame numbers being applied to the receiving layer on the back of the film with a dye such as bis-[l :3-diphenyl-2-thiobarbituric acid- 5]- pentamethine oxonol, which is removed or decolourized during processing. Instead of frame numbers the film may be notched. A white border for the final prints may be obtained by heavily fogging the negative in the border areas or by applying a water-impermeable resist to the border areas of either the negative or the receiving layer. In most of the examples, the receiving layer is prepared by mixing sodium sulphide with lead acetate, zinc nitrate and silver nitrate soluitions in the presence of the colloid stabilizer. Specification 745,445 is referred to.
