Abstract

721,071. Photographic gelatino-silver halide materials for preparation of gauze-type printing screens. KODAK, Ltd. Nov. 13, 1952 [Nov. 14, 1951], No. 28645/63. Class 98 (2). A flexible transparent support as of cellulose ester or ether or synthetic resin such as polyvinyl acetate carries a first gelatine-silver halide layer overcoated with a second similar layer which may be half the thickness of the first layer and which contains a yellow colouring matter such as colloidal silver, lead chromate pigment or Chrysophenin. The two emulsion layers may contain a tanning developing agent such as 4-phenyl catechol and a resin such as polymethyl acrylate or an ethyl acrylateacrylonitrile copolymer. To form a printing screen exposure is effected in contact with a positive image through the support and the material is developed in alkaline sodium sulphite solution, immersed in an acetic acid stop bath, and washed in warm water to remove all untanned undeveloped emulsion; after which the gelatin side is placed in contact with a waterwetted silk screen and dried; and chloroform is applied to the silk side to soften the support or else the latter is heated for the same purpose, and then the support is stripped off. The yellow colouring matter in the upper layer of the material acts as antihalation backing and also limits the effect of exposure, permitting more exposure in small aperture areas of the positive and so increases latitude. Disadvantages of a method of preparing a silk screen by transfer of a tanned relief image made from a single emulsion layer containing 4-phenyl catechol are discussed. Specification 587,957 is referred to.
