Abstract

1,072,862. Preparing resists. EASTMAN KODAK CO. June 18, 1964 [June 24, 1963], No. 25212/64. Heading G2C. Photographic resists are formed by developing an exposed unhardened colloid silver halide emulsion layer with a 1, 4-dihydroxy benzene silver halide developing agent e.g. hydroquinone, or chloro-, bromo-, tolu- or morpholino-methylhydroquinone, the exposed layer being brought before or during development into contact with an unhardened pigmented colloid layer, whereby oxidized developing agent can diffuse from the image developing areas of the exposed layer into the pigmented colloid layer and harden the colloid layer imagewise, and removing the unhardened areas of the pigmented layer, which may then have been separated from the emulsion layer. The pigmented layer which may contain the tanning developer or an alkali may be coated on the same support as the emulsion layer, either over it or under it, and the emulsion may contain the tanning developer and may be a direct positive emulsion containing stannous chloride or formamidine sulphonic acid as fogging agent. The unhardened gelatine may be removed by transfer to an absorbent support or washing with warm water. The tanning developer may be mixed with an auxiliary developer e.g. metol or a 3-pyrazolidone. Specified pigments are carbon black and titanium dioxide. In order to make a stencil the pigmented layer when separate is coated on a porous support e.g. cloth or paper.
