Abstract

1292359 Photographic dye developer diffusion transfer process EASTMAN KODAK CO 6 Feb 1970 [6 Feb 1969] 5771/70 Heading G2C A dye developer diffusion transfer process wherein a photographic material comprising a support bearing at least two dye image-forming units each comprising a light-sensitive silver halide emulsion layer and a dye developer in the emulsion layer or in a layer below (i.e. nearer the support) the silver halide emulsion layer, the silver halide in each emulsion layer being sensitive to a different region of the spectrum, and between the two units a stratum permeable to alkaline aqueous solution and composed of a water-insoluble polyvalent metal salt of a polymer, the polymer itself being film-forming, water-soluble and permeable to alkaline aqueous solution and containing free carboxylic acid groups, the stratum being less permeable to a dye developer in alkaline aqueous solution than a layer of the polymer itself, is exposed to a light image and developed and residual dye developers allowed to diffuse in register to a receiving layer, and wherein a catechol which is a silver halide developing agent and which has a chelating action on the polyvalent metal that is destroyed imagewise by oxidation as a function of the reduction of the light-struck silver halide to silver is present in the material during development, whereby the stratum is rendered more permeable to dye developer in the areas above the non-light-struck areas of the emulsion layer in the lower of said two dye image-forming units than in the areas above the light-struck areas thereof. The catechol may have the formula:- wherein R 1 , R 2 , R 3 and R 4 are each H, OH, halogen, carboxy, aryloxy, alkyl or aryl or wherein R 2 and R 3 or R 3 and R 4 taken together with the carbon atoms to which they are attached, and if these carbon atoms were joined by a single bond, represent the atoms necessary to form a cycloalkyl group. Preferred catechols are 4-phenyl,-3- isopropyl-, 4-t-butyl-, p-chloro- and 4-phenoxycatechol and catechol itself. The polyvalent metal salt of the polymer may be calcium alginate. The catechol may be in the sensitive material, receiving sheet or contained in an aqueous alkaline processing composition. The material may contain an auxiliary silver halide developing agent which is not a chelating agent for the polyvalent metal. Reference is made to Specification 1096343 and 1198150.
