Abstract
996,356. Hydro-pneumatic shock absorbers. STABILUS INDUSTRIEUND HANDELSGESELLSCHAFT m.b.H. May 14, 1962 [May 17, 1961], No. 18514/62. Heading F2S. In a method pressurizing the gas chamber 13 of a hydro-pneumatic shock absorber a peg 19 with a slot 18 is first introduced into a filling orifice 17 in a cover 16 of a cylinder 11 so that the upper end of the slot 18 projects outwardly above the cover 16 and then a cylinder 23, with a resilient insert 24 and having a plunger 27 mounted in its bore 25, is clamped against the cover 16 over the peg 19. Pressurizing gas, e.g. nitrogen with a small amount of a leak detector auxiliary gas, is then passed through a pipe 26 branched from the cylinder 22, through the slot 12 in the peg 19, and into the chamber 13. As soon as the gas in the chamber 13 has reached the desired pressure the supply of gas is cut off and the plunger 27 is moved downwardly either manually or automatically, e.g. by pneumatic, or hydraulic means responsive to the pressure in the chamber 13, to drive the unslotted part of the peg 19 home into the bore 17. The cylinder 23 can then be removed from the cover 16 and the top of the peg can be soldered, or burred over. The peg 19, which can be made of steel, non-ferrous metal, or plastics, may be uniformly conical, or cylindrical throughout. In a modification the orifice 17 is sealed by a ball which is fed through a slide leading into the bore 25 of the cylinder each time the plunger 27 is operated, the end of the plunger 27 being of concave shape to fit over the ball.
