[Also in Division F1] Clamping means, such as for clamping a workpiece in a machine-tool, comprises a twostage hydraulic ram 23, 24 operable to hold the work lightly and then at an intensified pressure, the operating liquid being supplied from a reservoir 14 pressurized by a compressed gas. When pressure is applied through a line 17, liquid passes a ball-valve 32 and moves the clamping piston 25, against a spring 38, to clamp the work lightly. Pressure build-up then moves the piston 24, the ball-valve 32 closes on its seating, and a piston extension 30 causes an intensified pressure in a chamber 38. The reservoir may supply several clamps. In modifications, the pistons are annular and move on a tubular body, or the return movement is achieved by compressed air instead of springs.
