Abstract

1284494 Workholders MOSKOVSKY ZAVOD AVTOMATICHESKIKH LINY STANKOLINIA 12 March 1970 11881/70 Heading B3B [Also in Division F1] A single-acting hydraulic cylinder 2, Fig. 1, suitable for clamping a workpiece 11 to a table 8 has a piston 5 slidable therein, a rod 6 displaceable relative to the cylinder 2 and piston 5, a first spring 13 arranged between a flange 6<SP>1</SP> of rod 6 and the piston 5, a second spring 16 arranged between the rod 6 and the cylinder end 15 and means 14 including a non-return valve (not shown) for supplying pressurized hydraulic fluid to the cylinder space 17, thereby displacing the piston and also compressing the springs. As shown, the lower outer end of the rod 6 is secured to the table 8 and a clamp member 18 resting on the workpiece 11 is contoured to fit the cylinder head 3. On admitting pressure fluid at 14 to cylinder space 17, piston 5 lifts a distance h until it abuts a shoulder on rod 6, thus compressing spring 13 after which the cylinder 2 is forced downwards, thus compressing spring 16 and urging clamp member 18 against the workpiece 11. The fluid supply is then disconnected and clamping pressure is maintained by spring 13. To release the clamp the trapped fluid is discharged from space 17 by means not shown. For use with a workpiece 22 of greater thickness, a manually adjusted threaded clamp member 19 held by a lock-nut 20 abuts the workpiece 22 and on pressurizing space 17 the member 19 is urged downwardly. In a modification the cylinder 52, Fig. 3, remains stationary and on admitting pressure fluid at 59 to cylinder space 60 the piston 54 is depressed against a spring seated on a flange 55<SP>1</SP> of a rod 55 which in turn results in compression of the rod 55, a distance c. An angled clamp member 61 carried by a post 64 is then positioned by a nut 63 so as to abut the upper end of rod 55 and the workpiece 62 after which the cylinder space 60 is connected to exhaust to allow rod 55 to be extended by the springs, thereby pivoting member 61 about a curved washer 65 acting as a fulcrum.
