Abstract

722,532. Extracting gudgeon pins. JERRAM, W. A. Jan. 22, 1953 [Jan. 30, 1952], No. 2494/52. Class 61 [Also in Group XXII] A jig for fitting and removing gudgeon pins in or from pistons and connecting rods comprises one or more adjustable swivel clamps, an adjustable pressure ram for applying pressure to the gudgeon pin, an adjustable platform for the piston and connecting rod and an adjustable pressure clamp for forcing the piston against the adjustable clamp or clamps. The apparatus consists of a frame A carrying a pair of adjustable clamps B secured in position by studs N and lock nuts Q. Each clamp is drilled to receive an electric heater element C and one of the clamps is provided with a thermostat D. Threaded vertically into the top face of frame A is an adjustable platform E on which the piston (not shown) is placed. Opposite the clamps B is arranged an adjustable pressure clamp F attached to a threaded rod G which is a sliding fit in its housing Hand which may be locked in position by a lock nut I. Mounted above the pressure clamp F is a screw-threaded adjustable pressure ram J operated by a tommy bar K. A support strap R secures the clamps B in a rigid position whilst the pressure clamp forces the piston (not shown) against said clamps. In operation the crown of the piston is placed on the platform E, the height of which is adjusted so that the gudgeon pin housing of the piston is in alignment with the pressure ram J. The piston is clamped in position and the clamps B are heated by operating a switch M. When the piston reaches the desired temperature, the gudgeon pin is pressed into or removed from the piston by operating the pressure ram J. A pilot lamp L gives warning that the heater element is functioning. The clamps may be heated by steam or gas.
