Abstract

971,831. Welding by fusion. MELBRO MACHINE TOOLS Ltd. Sept. 11, 1961 [Sept. 9, 1960], No. 31064/60. Heading B3R. A device for clamping workpieces 40, 41, together prior to welding, comprises a frame 12 having legs 11, at least one electromagnet 27 attached to each leg which engages work 41, and an hydraulic ram 19 carried by a crossbeam 15, which carries a plate 21 for engaging work 40. Each leg 11 has apertures 13 to allow adjustment of crossbeam 15, ram 19 is connected to a hand-operated hydraulic pump 24, and the electromagnets are connected to a rectifier 37. In operation the device is wheeled up to the work by handles 35, and switch 42 is actuated to supply current to the electromagnets, thus clamping the device to work 41. Pump 24 is operated to move ram 19 downwardly to clamp work 40 against work 41, the pressure being indicated by pressure gauge 22. Each leg 11 may have a pair of electromagnets attached thereto.
