Abstract

1482081 Press control system SCIAKY ELECTRIC WELDING MACHINES Ltd 16 Oct 1974 [19 Oct 1973] 48781/73 Heading B5F [Also in Division B3] A control system for a clamp or press with a movable platen has means to apply a momentary impulse to the platen to move it to the clamping or pressing position and means to apply a clamping or pressing force fractionally before the clamping or pressing position of the platen is reached. The clamp or press may be used for resistance welding and the control system reduces the impact between a workpiece and an electrode. The press or clamp may be pneumatic or hydraulic. The platen is driven by a piston 10 above which compressed air is supplied through a spring-loaded poppet valve B and a valve S 1 to initiate a stroke. The valve B closes automatically as the piston moves downward to apply the momentary impulse and the piston and platen move under their own inertia. At or near the clamping or pressing position a valve S 2 connects line 16 to the compressed air main to apply pressure to the piston. The valve S 2 is operated by an adjustably positioned switch which may also energize a timer for the resistance welding operation.
