1325481 Cutting-out presses SAMCO STRONG Ltd 13 Aug 1970 [14 Aug 1969] 39002/70 Heading B4B A cutting-out press comprises a lower platen 12, an upper platen 14, first fluid pressure means 20, 22 for effecting relative movement of approach between the platens so as to perform a cutting stroke, a work support 26 for supporting the material to be cut, e.g. leather or textiles, and a cutting knife, and second fluid pressure means 34, 36 for effecting heightwise movement of the support means towards and away from the lower platen, the arrangement being such that when the work support is caused to move by the latter pressure means into a position away from the lower platen, movement of the work support transversely of the lower platen is facilitated; a control means 46, 54 is provided whereby, upon initiation of a cutting stroke of the press, the second fluid pressure operated means is operated to cause the work support to move into engagement with the lower platen thus to provide a rigid support for the work support during a cutting stroke of the press. The first fluid pressure means includes a piston connected by a rod 20 to the upper platen 14 via a column. The second fluid-pressure means includes a piston 34 attached by a rod 36 to a bracket 38 which, via rollers 40, is movable along a track 42 provided on the lower platen 12. The piston 34 co-operates with a cylinder 32 connected to the work support 26. A number of piston-and-cylinder devices 32, 34 are mounted on each side of the work support as shown. When the press is being set-up the work support is raised as shown by the pressurized devices 32, 34. When cutting is to be effected solenoid valves 46, 54 are energized thereby causing the upper platen to be moved downwardly under pressure and, simultaneously, the work support moves down into contact with the lower platen by gravity when the cylinders 32 are exhausted by the operation of the solenoid 54.
