A unit for the production of the parts by stamping, pressing or the like comprises a press or the like, Fig. 7, having an upper movable platen and a lower supporting table, at least one motor-driven carriage running on guideways disposed on one side of the press and being adapted to support a tool assembly 42 before use, and at least one carriage 45 running along guideways 48 on the other side of the press and adapted to support each tool assembly after use, and control means operative to bring each carriage into alignment with the supporting table. Rollers such as 41, 44, 44a are provided on both the press table and on the carriages to facilitate the movement of the tool on to and away from the press table. A switchboard 43 is provided for controlling the press and the carriages and for ensuring the alignment of the carriages with the supporting table. The tool assembly, Fig. 1, comprises a lower die la, and an upper cutting and stamping punch 1b secured respectively to lower and upper bases 1, 6. The lower base carries guide rods 3 upon which the upper base carrying the punch is slidably guided. The two bases 1, 6 are biased apart by springs 4. The guide-rods 3 have resilient buffers at their upper ends for limiting the upstroke of the upper base 6. The latter carries an adjustable rod 9 for engagement with the moving platen of the press. In another embodiment, Fig. 4, the top base 6 is connected to the platen by a flange assembly 15, 16 which is adjustable for varying the stroke. The flange assembly 16 is secured to the platen of the press by clamping levers 21, 21a actuated by compressed air pistons 23, 23a operating in cylinders 22, 22a disposed above the press platen. Compressed air is supplied to these cylinders under the control of a valve 25. The lower base 1 is secured to the press table by horizontally slidable clamping jaws 26, 26a, Fig. 6, which are moved towards or away from each other by lead-screws 34, 34a connected together by a chain 36 and actuated through a reduction gear unit 40. A locating finger 27, Fig. 5 (not shown), is actuated by the inward movement of one of the clamping jaws to locate the tool assembly in its correct position on the press table. Drawers 47 are provided in the carriage 45, Fig. 7, for receiving the pressed components ; similar drawers may be provided in the left-hand carriage for different kinds of workpieces.
