Abstract

552,620. Work-holders; straightening. ROE & CO., Ltd., A. V., and REDRUP, C. B. Jan. 19, 1942, No. 757. [Classes 83 (iii) and 83 (iv)] Work pieces such as spars 2, 3 supported on a jig-plate 4 are clamped and/or straightened prior to operation in machine tools by means comprising hydraulic cylinders located by T-bolts in the machine table a or auxiliary table placed thereon. The table has T-slots b, c, the slot c being fitted with hollow bolts e each secured to a piston f below which fluid from a line is admitted to cause cylinder g to move a plate h to clamp the spars 2, 3 against the releasing pressure of a spring i. A series of straightening cylinders n having locating ribs p are secured by bolts q to the table at each side of the work, and fluid supplied by lines r, s moves pistons m to straighten the work by forcing it against the jig-plate, or withdraws the pistons to permit the operation of milling or other tools. In operation, pressure is supplied first to the straightening clamps and then to the holding-down clamps. Hydraulic fluid is supplied by a pump v driven by a motor u and is controlled by valves w, x, all the parts being mounted on the machine table or an extension thereof.
