971,408. Welding by pressure. SIEMENSSCHUCKERTWERKE A.G. Nov. 26, 1962 [Dec. 5, 1961], No. 44707/62. Heading B3R. In a butt welding machine comprising a pair of clamping means for clamping a pair of workpieces to be butt welded, one clamping means comprises a fixed and a movable member between which a workpiece is to be held by pressure applied to the movable member, an hydraulic or pneumatic cylinder and piston arrangement for applying the pressure to the movable member, a support within which the cylinder is mounted and a carriage guiding the piston in its displacement, the cylinder and piston being removable from the support from the side remote from the movable member. A stand 1 connected to the frame of a flash-butt welder carries a fixed electrode 4 and the cylinder 8 is fixed by a flange 10 and bolts 11 to the support 5 bolted at 7 to the stand. A carriage 13 connected to the electrode 6 is guided by the support 5 and has an upper aperture 14. The cylinder 8 and piston 9 may be installed in and removed from the support 5 through the aperture 14.
