Abstract
970,302. Welding by fusion. BRITISH OXYGEN CO. Ltd. Jan. 27, 1961 [Jan. 28,1960], No. 3089/60. Heading B3R. Welding apparatus has a clamp for holding a first workpiece against a backing member, feeding means for feeding a second workpiece into abutment with the first and one or more guide members pressing the second workpiece against the backing member as it is fed. The apparatus may form part of a machine for welding the trailing edge of one strip to the leading edge of another as described in Specification 901,149. The strip 13 is fed into the welding position by rolls 32 and is held against a backing bar 11 by a clamp 17 in the form of a beam or fingers 19a each attached to the frame 15 by a spring strip 21 and pivoted into clamping position about the rounded head of a stud 22 against the action of a spring 27 by inflation of a pneumatic hose 20a. A clamp 18 similar to the clamp 17 under the action of a compression spring 23 presses and guides the second strip 14 against the backing bar 11 as it is fed by rolls 31. When the strips abut, a pneumatic hose 20b is inflated to clamp the second strip 14 and the joint is welded. In a modification the clamp 17 is provided with a compression spring 23 and serves to guide the first strip 13. In a further modification the guide members are separate from the clamps, and are guide wheels or fingers pressed against the work by a spring, a lever or a hand-operated cam or by fluid pressure. The apparatus in another modification is used to weld, the longitudinal seams of cylinders, the backing bar being in the form of a cantilever.
