Abstract

1338063 Joining timber COOK BOLINDERS Ltd 11 Feb 1972 [11 Nov 1970] 53721/70 Heading B5L A machine for "finger jointing" timber comprises gluing and cutting means mounted in a common housing which traverses the timber path through the machine to tongue and groove opposed ends of two pieces of timber, the cutting means comprising a pair of cutters rotatable in opposite directions. Means are provided to clamp the timber on either side of the cutter path and to feed one piece towards the other to engage their shaped ends after cutting and gluing. Timber is advanced by rollers 11, 12 between opposed clamping jaws 19, 45 of a unit 14, the upper jaws 45 being backed by inflatable bags 28 to produce even pressure. The jaws as a unit are attached to rods 39 slideable in brackets on the machine frame. Similar but stationary jaws in a unit 16 are provided on the opposite side of the cutter housing 15 followed by outfeed rollers (17), Fig. 1 (not shown). The housing has driven cutters 50, 51 rotatable in opposed directions and cutting in the direction of feed of the housing past the timber ends, and a grooved glue applying roller 58 which, in the upper position of the housing, engages a roller 61 in a reservoir 62. A brush 64 cleans the cut grooves prior to gluing and sawdust is drawn off by vacuum means through a duct 66. The housing traverses a closed, e.g. rectangular path in a vertical plane, a vertical arm of the path providing the working stroke. When the work ends are cut and one of them glued, the jaw unit 14 is advanced initially by a piston and cylinder 31 until a link 41a is horizontal and then by an H.P. piston and cylinder 42 through the then aligned link 41a and rod 32 to apply final pressure to the interengaged work ends. A transverse cutting saw (18) may be provided downstream of the outfeed rollers.
