[Also in Division H2] A device for connecting electric lines to electrodes or base-plates in eleotro-slag remelting apparatus comprises two opposed pivoted members 21 operating in a common plane, each having a jaw member 3 the jaws being operated to open and close by an hydraulic or pneumatic piston and cylinder arrangement located between the pivoted members. The jaw members 3, which are water-cooled, are connected by copper strips (not shown) and guide rails 7 to one pole of a common electric source, and are secured to the pivoted members 21 by the rounded heads 19 of bolts 17 encircled by holding rings 15 acting as ball-and-socket joints, so that each jaw can orientate itself to conform with the surface of the electrode or base-plate inserted between the jaws. The jaws are insulated from the pivoted members by plates 13 and bushings 12. The members 21 are pivoted at points 23, and between the arms opposite to those supporting a jaw are located a piston 25 and cylinder 27, each connected to one of the arms and operable by hydraulic pressure to move the pivots and open or close the jaws, a set of plate springs 29 carried on rod 30 inside tube 35, and a pair of helical springs 39. These helical springs 39 are located about pressure bolts 42 which can be screwed relative to glide pieces 41 to alter the initial spacing of the jaws and to give the springs 39 an initial compression. The faces of the jaws 3 have two ribs, and a flank angle α on these ribs of between 100 degrees and 140 degrees, preferably 125 degrees.
