Abstract

1287065 Anode rod tightening apparatus D A B DUCLAUX 13 April 1970 [14 April 1969] 17347/70 Heading B3N [Also in Division H2] Apparatus for tightening anode rods 10 on to the main bus-bars 3 of alumina electrolysis cells comprises a clamping device and an operating mechanism; the clamping device includes levers 4, 5 articulated on a common shaft 6 and pivoted to nuts 9 which are engaged by a double threaded screw 8 for moving the levers towards and away from each other so that jaws 7 can grip anode 10 against bus-bar 3; the operating mechanism includes a clamp having pivotable jaws 12 for gripping shaft 6, a wrench 14 for engaging and rotating a nut 81 fixed to screw 8 and a flanged roller 11 for engaging the anode to act as a guide for the operating mechanism. Further included is an electric or fluid motor 18 and an electromechanical jack or fluid cylinder 24 for controlling a vertical ram 17 connected to the wrench 14. The apparatus is pivotably connected to two arms integral with a lifting bell 15 and the roller 11 is biased against the anode by a spring 19. In operation the ram 17 is extended, with roller 11 abutting the anode, until the wrench 14 engages nut 81; at such point jaws 12 engage shaft 6. The nut 81 is rotated to disengage jaws 7 from the anode and allow springs 13 to move the jaws 12 to grip the shaft 6. The ram is then returned until the roller 11 engages an intermediate part 21 of the lifting bell. The anode can now be removed by the gripping bell and a new anode replaced in a reverse procedure.
