Abstract
557,538. Electric arc furnaces. BRASSERT & CO., Ltd., H. A., and NISSIM, R. May 22, 1942, No. 6976. [Class 39 (iii)] A furnace electrode 10 is enclosed in a sheath 12 which is sealed to it at the upper end, and at the lower end is provided with a water cooled ring 13 and a flange 14 dipping into a sand trough 15 in the furnace roof 16. The electrode and sheath are suspended at 18 independently of the furnace. Clamps 19 are provided around the electiode within the sheath, and each is adjusted by manual operation of a screw 23 against a rod 21 through a wedge 22. Pressure on the electrode clamp may also be adjusted by rotation of the ring 24. The ring may be rotated by a hydraulically operated piston 27 having fluid pressure on both sides, that on the upper side being controlled by a valve 30. If the exhaust pipe breaks, the piston moves downwards to lock the clamp. Two wedges may be employed as at 31, or the clamp may be tapered as at 33. In a modification, Fig. 2 (not shown), the clamp is adjusted by means of a wedge mounted on a threaded vertical adjusting rod. In another modification, Fig. 3 (not shown), pressure is exerted upon the clamp by a screw rotated by a rack and pinion mechanism, and in Fig. 4 (not shown), by a pair of wedges, one of which is vertically movable. In Fig. 5 (not shown) pressure is exerted on the clamp by spring pressure upon a piston, the pressure being adjustable by fluid pressure on the opposite side of the piston. In another modification, Fig. 6 (not shown), each clamp is suspended independently of the sheath and the furnace roof, and the sheath is suspended independently of the roof.
