Abstract

143,292. Moore, W. E. Feb. 14, 1919. Electrode furnaces.-In a tilting furnace, Figs. 1 and 2, the electrodes are mounted in arms 109 each supported by a separate crane fixed to the furnace; the hoisting-cables 145, 146 pass through hollow vertical columns 140 to hand or electricallyoperated drums located independently of the furnace. The cables of the outer columns converge. before leaving the furnace, to pulleys at the base of the centre column lying approximately in the tilting axis. Each crane jib 138 is fixed to a swivel cap 144 carrying two pulleys 162. The arms 109 are counterpoised by weights 140a attached to cables. Each electrode arm is hollow and consists of top and side plates, the latter of which embrace the hollow column and are secured to a guide-block 117 having a collar 118 and a groove engaging a feather 143 on the column; the side plates 114, 115 are insulated from the column and block, and between them is clamped a pair of plates 175 having diagonal grooves to receive the electric conductors 174. The electric conductors are clamped outside the furnace at a point in the tilting axis. The feather 143 extends only partly up the column, so as to allow the electrode arms to be turned when the electrodes are withdrawn from the furnace. The electrodes pass through water-cooled glands 100 resting on refractory rings 97. The electrodeholders, Fig. 4, comprise a fixed section 122 secured to the plates 114, 115, and hinged sections 123, 124 clamped together by a bolt and nut; each section is double water-jacketed, connecting-pipes with swivelled unions 135 being provided at the hinges. Flexible electric connexions 137 are also provided. The hinge-pins are slightly oval.
