Abstract
A consumable electrode furnace 10 has a plurality of electrodes 36 supported by a single suspension apparatus for lowering simultaneously into separate crucibles 32 for electroslag melting. The electrode stub clamps 20 are supported by a disc 12 in electrical connection with conductors 18, disc 12 being conductive or separate conductors being used therefor. The disc hub 14 is mounted on a rod 22 reciprocated hydraulically in a cylinder 24 to raise or lower the electrodes 36, brushes 26 making sliding contact with the conductors 18. The disc 121, Fig. 4, has less electrode clamp 201 then crucibles 321, so that simultaneously some electrodes are being melted, some new electrodes are being attached to the clamps, and some ingots are solidifying within their crucibles or being stripped therefrom, the disc 211 being rotatable by an hydraulic cylinder 72. Furnace 101 is sufficiently symmetrical to balance reactances. The supply is single- or three-phase, and the lowering or raising or electrodes is controlled automatically, Fig. 5 (not shown). The melting operation is such that each electrode-crucible combination is self-compensating.
