Abstract

1414750 Furnace electrodes DAIDO SEIKO KK 9 March 1973 [16 March 1972] 11550/73 Heading H5H To connect a new to an old electrode in an electric arc furnace the new electrode 1 is positioned in a holder, and the whole assembly is lowered by crane over the old electrode 2 in the furnace, guiding means 31 correctly positioning the electrodes so that nipple 33 of the new electrode enters threaded hole 34 of the old electrode whereupon a pair of jaws 17 grip the old electrode, and a further pair of jaws 11 grip and rotate the new electrode so as to screw it on to the old electrode. The jaws 11 move cyclically to rotate the electrode in stages, by gripping it, turning it, releasing it, returning to their original position, then gripping and repeating the cycle, the operation of the jaws and the turning action being performed by pressurized oil in piston and cylinder arrangements. Accurate lowering of the new electrode on to the old electrode is carried out by piston and cylinder arrangements 14 interconnecting two distinct parts 4, 5 of the holder.
