Abstract
968,846. Cutting and welding by fusion. FISHER & LUDLOW Ltd. Oct. 11, 1961 [Oct. 14, 1960], No. 35203/60. Headings B3R and B3V. In arc welding or machining apparatus, the electrical supply circuit connected between the electrode and the work includes a transformer connected through an automatic timing mechanism to an A.C. supply and an electrical starting unit connected in parallel to the transformer and the timing mechanism, the timing mechanism being operable to alternately make and break the circuit. The starting unit may be a highfrequency unit. Intermittent welds are formed between members 10, 11, Fig. 1, mounted in a chuck 12 by an iron powder contact type electrode 13 in a holder 14 gravity fed by a weight 23. The current supply intervals are controlled by the timing mechanism. The chuck 12 is rotated continuously or intermittently. In a modification, a series of plug welds are produced on a workpiece on a movable holder 35, Fig. 2, by a contact type electrode 30 mounted in a holder 31 on a lever 32 balanced by a weight 34 to produce a light gravity loading on the electrode 30.
