Abstract
996,126. Welding by fusion. R. NEVILLE. Oct. 18, 1963 [Oct. 19, 1962], No. 39639/62. Heading B3R. In electric arc-welding, a succession of arcs are produced by vibrating an electrode out of and into contact with the work by means controlled by an electric circuit completed by contact of the electrode with the work. A consumable fluxed electrode 21 is secured in a holder 19 attached to the armature 10 of a solenoid 3 fixed to a handle 13. Welding current is fed through a lead to a connector 14 in the handle 13. One end of the solenoid coil 2 is connected to the connector 14 and the other end is attached to a flexible lead 8 which passes welding current through the armature 10 to the electrode 21. When the electrode 21 is brought into contact with the work, the solenoid 3 retracts the electrode 21 momentarily to strike an arc of brief duration. The arc breaks and the electrode 21 is repeatedly returned to the work by a spring 8.
