Abstract
901,953. Machine-tool details. WOODWORTH CO., N. A. March 28, 1961, No. 11389/61. Class 83 (3). A fluid pressure-operated work clamping fixture is arranged so that a spring is compressed when a clamping jaw is held in its clamping position and leakage of fluid from the clamping cylinder first results in decompression of the spring before the clamping jaw moves. One form of the work clamp comprises a base 10, Fig. 4, with two laterally spaced cylinders 14, 16 and pistons 28, 30, respectively, having piston-rods 32, 34 connected by a bridgepiece 38. The work is adapted to be clamped between the flat surface 40 of the base casting and the bridge-piece. Each piston is capable of limited axial movement on the end of the rod between a shoulder 48 and the washer 52 of a securing nut 50. The piston is normally forced against the shoulder by dished spring washers 54, 56, but when clamping is effected the washers are compressed and the piston moves away from the shoulder 48. Arrangements are made in the control so that if the supply of compressed air to the pistons fails, a valve closes to prevent the work becoming loose. The spring washers also ensure that clamping pressure is maintained on the work for some time after failure of the supply despite small leakages. A single cylinder clamping device is also described.
