Abstract
879,825. Hydraulic intensifiers. AMP Inc. July 20, 1960 [July 27, 1959], No. 25235/60. Class 69 (2). A pressure-multiplying device comprises a lowpressure pneumatic cylinder 8 containing a piston 22 having a plunger 14 extending into a high - pressure hydraulic cylinder 2, and a reservoir 30 for the hydraulic fluid disposed within the pneumatic cylinder and arranged to be in communication with the hydraulic cylinder when the piston is retracted, the reservoir having a movable wall 20 maintained under pressure. The movable wall consists of a diaphragm clamped beyween a base portion 4 and the pneumatic cylinder 8 and is maintained under pressure by a conical spring 32 which also serves to urge the piston 12 and plunger 14 to a retracted position. In the latter position, a passage 28 is uncovered by the plunger to permit fluid from the reservoir to pass into the hydraulic cylinder. As the plunger is moved forward by pneumatic pressure supplied through a port 16, the passage 28 is closed and highpressure hydraulic fluid is delivered through a port 40. The liquid in the reservoir can be replenished through a cap 42. The diaphragm is protected from damage by the spring by a plastic tube 34, the tube also increasing the bearing area of the spring. In another embodiment, the plastic tube is replaced by a semitoroidal member having a radius of curvature slightly less than that of the surface 18 of the reservoir. The device may be used in apparatus for crimping electrical terminals or setting rivets.
