Abstract
627,170. Hydraulic shock-absorbers. NEWTON, N. B. July 22, 1947, No. 19584. [Class 108 (iii)] In a hydraulic shockabsorber comprising a liquid filled cylinder c having a piston movable therein, a concentric outer cylinder b forming a compensating chamber partly containing liquid and partly containing air and wherein the piston-rod carries a dust cover which projects over the outer cylinder, a filling hole is provided in the wall of the outer cylinder so positioned that it is co-related with the dust cover to determine the liquid level in the outer cylinder for the correct volume of liquid in the shockabsorber. In the arrangement shown, a screwed socket a projects into the space between the cylinders band c and carries a countersunk screwed plug d. The length of the dust cover is such that its lower edge just clears the filling hole when the piston is about 2/ 3 rd of its stroke within the cylinder c, in which position the liquid level e<SP>1</SP> corresponds to that for the correct volume of liquid in the shock-absorber. The shock-absorber is filled by placing it in a horizontal position and working the piston to completely fill the cylinders band c. The shock-absorber is then raised to the vertical position and with the lower edge of the dust cover just clear of the filling hole surplus liquid allowed to drain off, before inserting the plug d. Alternatively, liquid may be inserted into the shock-absorber in situ on the vehicle to which it is attached, by means of a pump connected to the filling hole. The air in the compensation chamber may provide suspension resilience.
