Abstract

984,835. Umbrellas, F. HARLOW. Nov. 1, 1963 [Nov. 2, 1962], No. 41484/62. Heading A4P. [Also in Division E2] In an umbrella in which the supporting pole A, B can be arranged centrally or outside of the perimeter of the cover, the cover supporting frame C consists of stretcher ribs 8 pivoted at 9 to a notch 10 and bracing ribs 11 pivoted at 12 to a collar 13, and at 14, to the stretcher ribs, the frame being slidable on the pole part A which is formed of members 1, 2, 3 connected together by hinge joints 4, 5. The pole part A is securable by either end to pole part B which consists of a tubular member 6 having a screw connection 33, and a telescopic part 7 locked in groundentering position by a locking ring 21 as disclosed in Specification 915,923. As shown in Fig. 1, the frame is slid on to pole member 1, the collar 13 and bush 18, with locking screw 19, abutting end stop 15 and the hinge joint 4, when broken, retaining the notch 10 with the frame erected. The joint 5 is of the kind having rigidly locked positions as disclosed in Specification 944,829. A loose sleeve 17 prevents turning inside out of the cover resulting from too close approximation of the notch and runner. To convert to a centrally supported umbrella, as shown in Fig. 4, the pole part A is reversed, the joint 4 being locked in axially aligned position by the bush 18, the notch 10 abutting end stop 16 and the collar 13 being secured in a position to maintain the cover open by a stick spring 20 in the pole part 3. The umbrella may be secured by guy ropes and without the pole part B the umbrella can be carried in the hand. As shown in Fig. 5 the member 1, at one end, has a spring-urged ball 20 in a bore 25 and fork ends 26 carrying a pivot pin 29 for a tongue 28 on the member 2, the ball engaging a recess 27 to retain the members 1, 2 in aligned position during erection collapsing or conversion, and, at the opposite end, has a plug 30 bored at 31 and with a threaded portion 32 to receive the screws 33 and tip 34 on the pole member 6. As shown in Fig. 8 the spring catch 20 extends from a plug 35 through a slit 36 in the pole member 3 and is retracted by the tip 34 of the pole member 6 which pushes a rod 38 and deflector 37 to allow free running of the frame on the pole for conversion. The notch 10 carries a sealing ring 23 to prevent the passage of rainwater between the notch and the pole.
