Abstract
1,080,061. Umbrella for unimpeded sheltering. RAINBEATER Ltd. May 26, 1966 [May 26, 1965], No. 22290/65. Heading A4P. An umbrella for unimpeded sheltering comprises a shank 10, a plurality of ribs 13 supporting a covering 15, hinged to a member, preferably a collar 12, displaceable along the shaft, a plurality of stretchers 14 each hinged to the corresponding rib and to a fixed ring 11 near one end of the shank so that when the umbrella is in the closed position the ribs, stretchers and covering lie along the shank (Fig. 4, not shown), and when the umbrella is open, the ribs and covering form a bowl with the shank projecting from the convex surface (Fig. 1). A spring-loaded catch 16 is preferably located on the shank (Fig. 3) in such a position relative to the fixed ring that the collar can be maintained to hold the ribs and cover in the open position. The shank is preferably provided with a hinge 19 to enable flexure of the shank, the hinge being positioned beyond the possible extreme travel of the collar (i.e. when the umbrela is closed); a sleeve 24 can be slid over the hinge when desired to prevent flexure. The projecting end of the shank may be hollow and enclose an extensible portion 25. Fig. 1 illustrates the umbrella in use on the ground as a shield from wind and driving rain; the umbrella may also be fitted on some overhead structure projecting downwards with the complete shank straight.
