Abstract
802,489. Umbrellas. BREMSHEY, F., and EICKHORN, K. H. Dec. 3, 1956 [July 11, 1956], No. 36900/56. Class 134 A self-closing umbrella has telescopic stick parts 10 and 11 which are urged apart by an internal helical spring or by any other suitable spring, not necessarily disposed within the stick. The ribs 13 are pivoted to a crown 12 carried by the stick part 10, and the struts 30 are pivoted to a sleeve 28 which is movable along the stick parts and carries a locking member 32 which engages either of two openings in the stick part 11. A second locking member 26 mounted in the stick part 11 engages an opening in the lower end of stick part 10 when the two parts are pushed together. The umbrella can be opened with one hand frcm the position shown in Fig. 1 by placing the tip 15 of the stick part 10 against a firm support, such as the ground, and pressing the handle 19 to bring the umbrella to the position shown in Fig. 2 in which the locking member 26 engages the stick part 10 to hold the umbrella open. The umbrella can then be closed automatically by releasing the member 26. The umbrella can also be opened in the normal way by releasing the locking member 32 and moving the sleeve 28 upwards to the position shown in Fig. 3 in which the member 32 engages an upper opening in the stick part 11. Closing is then also effected in the normal way by moving the sleeve 28 down the stick. The locking members 26 and 32 can be combined in a single locking device, and the stick parts 10 and 11 and the sleeve 28 can be secured against relative rotation by means of longitudinal grooves pressed in the parts.
