Abstract
806,139. Umbrellas and walking sticks. KORTENBACH, A., WORRING, H. J., WORRING, D., WORRING, F., and KORTENBACH, K., [trading as KORTENBACH & RAUGH K.-G.]. June 4, 1957 [Oct. 26, 1956; Jan. 10, 1957], No. 17805/57. Class 134 An umbrella frame, of the type having stem members which are telescoped together to open the umbrella, is provided with tension springs 8, Fig. 3, connected between the stretchers 7 and clips 10, which connect the stretchers to ribs 4, and acting to urge the ribs towards the closed position to achieve automatic closing of the umbrella. The two stems 1, 2, Fig. 1, are locked together in the telescoped position by a catch 12 which may be released to close the umbrella by sliding sleeve 17 over stem 2 against the action of a spring 21. In order to use the closed umbrella as a walking stick, a draw rod 22, Fig. 4, is provided in the stems. This rod is formed with an arched portion 25 located adjacent the aperture 24 in stem 2 through which the catch 15 projects when the umbrella is closed. Thus the stems 1 and 2 are prevented from telescoping together when pressure is applied to the tip 5 unless the rod 22 is displaced by moving the sleeve 17 in opposition to the spring 23. The stem 1, Fig. 1, may be provided with two catches, the upper one being used to hold the umbrella open and the lower one to hold it closed, each when in use engaging in an aperture at the upper end of the stem 2. Each catch is released by an elongated form of the sleeve 17 extending to the stretcher ring 6 and separated therefrom by a spring tending to return the sleeve to its initial position. The umbrella may also comprise a third stem 33, Fig. 6, arranged intermediate the stems 1 and 2, so that the umbrella may be long or short when open. The umbrella may be opened either by telescoping all three stems together or by sliding stem 2 over stem 33 until the catch 12 springs into aperture 35 in stem 2.
