Abstract
655,269. Umbrellas. FROST, S. M., and KENDALL & SONS, Ltd., Feb. 9, 1948, No. 3795. [Class 134] In an umbrella, parasol or sunshade of the ordinary or collapsable type having a tubular stem 1, a notch 5 (to which the ribs are pivoted) and a plug 6 inserted into the end of the stem and between which and the notch the centre of the cover is secured, the stem, the notch and the plug are secured together by a tapering pin 27 frictionally driven into a tapering hole passing through these parts. The hole may be formed by drilling through the assembled parts in one operation and then bringing the hole to the required taper by means of a tapered reamer. The centre of the cover is provided with a two-part eyelet 13, as described in Specification 608,843, which is held between the notch 5 and a flange 9 on the plug 6, and preferably rests on a fabric or other flexible disc or cap 26. The umbrella is held open by a wire spring 20 bent to form a catch which projects through a slot in the stem 1 and connected at one end to the plug 6 by means of a pin or rivet 23 passing through a loop 21 in the wire and the limbs of the forked inner end 22 of the plug, or in a preferred modified form, Fig. 7, the catch is formed by a spring strip 30. The catch is disengaged by sliding a second tubular stem member into the first section 1. Specifications 608,764 and 655,267 are also referred to.
